INSTRUMENTS ?
5
INSTRUMENTS for RESEARCH !
6
NETWORK of EXCELLENCE
  • the art of GETTING TOGETHER to cross RIVERS!

7
NETWORK of EXCELLENCE
What is it?
It is a NETWORK of TEAMS, working together
towards a virtual research institute to achieve
EXCELLENCE at the forefront of Science and
Technology
What is it for?
It aims at REDUCING FRAGMENTATION and ADVANCING
KNOWLEDGE to increase competitiveness while
fostering sustainability of EU industry
How does it work?
It develops the PROGRESSIVE and LASTING
INTEGRATION of multidisciplinary research TEAMS
in selected areas of the Work Programme
8
INTEGRATED PROJECT
  • the art of BUILDING BRIDGES!

9
INTEGRATED PROJECT
What is it?
It is a cutting-edge INSTRUMENT for ACHIEVING
BREAKTHROUGH, by supporting and integrating work
in different RTD disciplines and activities in a
forward-looking perspective
What is it for?
It must provide RADICAL INNOVATION, identifying
integrated solutions for a sustainable,
competitive and socially appealing EU industry
How does it work?
It orchestrates the operational INTEGRATION of
RTD, innovation-related, knowledge-management and
skill-development DISCIPLINES, TECHNOLOGIES and
ACTIVITIES, in dialogue with society
10
SPECIFIC TARGETED RESEARCH PROJECT
  • the art of MAKING PILLARS!

11
SPECIFIC TARGETED RESEARCH PROJECT
What is it?
It is an INSTRUMENT to explore NEW CONCEPTS at
the FRONTIERS of KNOWLEDGE for supporting
ambitious and highly creative research
What is it for?
It performs as a FORWARD-THINKING TOOL for FUTURE
BREAKTHROUGHS, anticipating the needs of society
How does it work?
It addresses the need for NEW KNOWLEDGE planting
the seeds of long term innovation, it could be
considered an incubator of new ideas and paradigms
12
COORDINATION ACTION
  • the art of BRINGING TOGETHER!

13
COORDINATION ACTION
What is it?
It is an ACTION to bring together different RTD
initiatives (EUREKA, COST, ESF, national,
regional, European RTD Projects)
What is it for?
It aims at STRENGTHENING COORDINATION and the
LINKS between different research initiatives
How does it work?
It develops mutual synergies adding value to the
different research initiatives
14
SPECIFIC SUPPORT ACTION
  • the art of SUGGESTING!

15
SPECIFIC SUPPORT ACTION
What is it?
It is an INSTRUMENT to prepare future RTD
activities and policies in a foresight perspective
What is it for?
It performs as an INSTRUMENT to bring new and
forward-looking ideas and creativity to RTD
activities
How does it work?
It launches ACTIONS such as foresight
scenario-building and technology roadmaps to
orient RTD activities

CONCLUSIONS (1)
Industrial research is a key element to promote a
competitive and sustainable industry for the
European society
this requires new production and consumption
paradigms, founded on knowledge-based products,
processes and services
this goal can be achieved through radical
industrial innovation
founded on ST excellence, which integrates the
existing knowledge with the creation of new one
17
CONCLUSIONS (2)
Integration
is pivotal to transforming industry towards
high-added value organisations...
combining materials-sciences, nanotechnologies
and production technologies and bringing together
multi-sectoral dimensions
education and skills development should
complement these activities fostering the
dialogue with society
and generating enthusiasm for science !!!
18
THROUGH INTEGRATION !
ACHIEVING BREAKTHROUGH
