Title: Storm Drain BMPs
1Storm Drain BMPs
2Tempting Fate Where is all that dirt going to
end up?
Storm drain BMPs involve preventing sediment and
other pollutants from entering the drain.
SoStorm Drain BMPs are sediment management BMPs!
3Is THIS the right method of INLET
Protection?Or Lets protect this storm drain
with the very same material were trying to
protect it from!
Lets start with examples of what NOT to do
4Ineffective Inlet Protection
The surrounding area needs to be protected as
well or fine sediment will clog the drain and
will cause flooding. This may result in potential
uncontrolled discharge of sediment during heavy
rain events.
The sediment source should be protected with
erosion control BMPs, such as mulch or erosion
control blanket. Fine sediment will not be
filtered by the sand bags around the storm drain.
Protecting the storm drain with sand bags and
perforated pipe are not effective without source
control.
5Ineffective Inlet Protection
These rocks alone are too large to filter
sediment. Small rock should be laid down first,
and a silt screen or fiber roll could be placed
in front of inlet.
As before, the surrounding area needs to be
protected to prevent fine sediment from clogging
the drain.
6Ineffective Inlet Protection
Protecting the storm drain with fiber roll,
gravel bags, and inlet fabric are not enough to
be effective
without source protection! Again, the
surrounding area needs to be protected to
prevent fine sediment from clogging the drain,
leading to flooding and discharge of sediment
during heavy rain events.
7Storm Drain Inlets Protection Now for the good
examples!
The fiber roll slows down the flow of water,
allowing sediment to drop out before it flows
into the storm drain.
Inlet protection with weighted Fiber Roll
Notice that the soil is cut down and back of the
curb to minimize sediment runoff
8Good Example of Protecting Storm Drain Inlets
Gravel bags filter sediment because water can
pass through them before entering the storm drain
inlet.
Sand bags do not filter sediment, but instead
just divert the flow of water.
9Good Example of Protecting Storm Drain Inlets
Rock socks are geo-textile bags about 2 feet long
filled, with clean half-inch rock aggregate. The
fabric is very strong, holds up better to traffic
than gravel bags, and allows water to flow
through. This device can wrap around the storm
drain.

10Good Example of Protecting Storm Drain Inlets
This inlet is well protected The adjacent area
has been stabilized with an erosion control BMP
(straw mulch), and fiber rolls are used to
pre-filter storm water.
Combination of fiber rolls, gravel and mulch
11Storm Drain Inlet Filters
In order to work properly, Inlet filters must be
monitored and cleaned out regularly
Storm drain inlet filters are manufactured filter
or fabric bags that are placed in a storm drain
inlet to remove sediment and debris.
