Ancient Roman Economy

• Had banks
• Government officials collected taxes
• Same coins used throughout the empire
• Based on farming and trade
• Had no industry
• Business took place in the Forum

Farming

• Grew olives and grapes
• Exported oil and wine
• Most farmers sold what they grew
• Eventually large farms replace small ones
• Called latifundias

Trade

• They exported many other goods
• Such as pottery, bronze, and woolen cloths
• Shipping was big business
• No taxes on imported goods
• Imported luxury goods such as silk
• Also imported wheat

Early Republic - Patricians

• Oldest and richest family
• Only ones that could hold office
• Able to perform religions rituals
• Had more rights than the Plebeians

• Paid taxes
• Served in the Army
• Couldnt hold office
• Couldnt marry the Patricians
• Could be sold into slavery

Late Republic Social Classes

• Imperial Domus highest upper class man
• Senators are in the upper class
• Commoners are considered lower
• Latin's and foreigners considered lower class
• Anyone can become a slave

is Upper class Nice clothes, big houses, feasts,
lots of furniture. Lower class old clothes,
sometimes none at all, little shacks for houses,
not much food, no furniture.

The aqueducts were so important to Rome
because They brought water to irrigate
crops They brought in fresh drinking water into
the city They took waste and other sewage out of
the city preventing disease.
