Why do we need semicolons?

• separate parts in a sentence
• stronger than a comma, but not a strong as a
  period.

Semicolons in Compound Sentences

• Use a semicolon to join parts of a compound
  sentence without a coordinating conjunction.
• WHAT?????

• The mistake was simple the result was
  disastrous.
• It has no coordinating conjunction (and, but)
  so we need a semicolon.
• Get it?

Semicolons with Items in a Series

• When there are commas within parts of a series,
  use semicolons to separate the parts.

Colons

• A colon shows that a list follows.
• Colons are also used in business letters and time.

Use Colons to introduce a list of items

• Example
• Students in the US go to school in this order
  elementary school, middle school, high school,
  and college.
