Mt. Kilauea
  • Mt. Kilauea is located in the Hawaiian Islands
and sits on a Hot Spot beneath the Islands. The
Hot Spot provides an awesome supply of magma for
    the eruptions.
  • The very first time it erupted was in 1983 and it
continues to erupt to this day.

Mt. Kilauea
  • Mt. Kilauea erupts approximately 343 times a
year. The type of eruption is a gentle lava flow.
  • The core heats up the mantel making the lava so
hot that it goes into the volcano stream and
shoots out the top like fireworks.
  • The type of lava is called the sticky.

Lava tubes insulate rivers of lava from heat loss.

  • The sticky lava has caused so much damage to
Hawaii. It has burned down houses, demolished
    roads, and ruined cities.
  • In 1983 the first explosion killed 131 people.
Since then there have been no deaths just serious
    injuries.

Lava fountains destroyed 16 houses in 1983-1984

Mt. Kilauea
  • Mt. Kilauea gets bigger with every eruption. As
the lava slowly slides down the sides of the
volcano it forms a hard crust around the outer
    parts of the volcano.
  • The lava cools down when it flows into the ocean
    creating underwater volcanoes.

A caldera formed after a series of eruptions in
1992.

Mt. Kilauea
  • Mt. Kilauea has been active for the last 23
    years.
  • It continues to be one of the most active
    volcanoes on earth.

Lava eruptions flowing directly to the sea from
1987-1989.
