Sonnet 42
That thou hast her it is not all my grief,And
yet it may be said I loved her dearly,That she
hath thee is of my wailing chief,A loss in love
that touches me more nearly.Loving offenders
thus I will excuse ye,Thou dost love her,
because thou know'st I love her,And for my sake
even so doth she abuse me,Suff'ring my friend
for my sake to approve her.If I lose thee, my
loss is my love's gain,And losing her, my friend
hath found that loss,Both find each other, and I
lose both twain,And both for my sake lay on me
this cross,But here's the joy, my friend and I
are one,Sweet flattery, then she loves but me
alone.

Interpretation
  • Topic love
  • Speaker is sad
  • There are a man and a woman and the speaker
loves both, but the two of them find each other
so the speaker finally lost both.
  • At the end he says
  • But here's the joy, my friend and I are
one, Sweet flattery, then she loves but me
    alone.
  • I think that he means, that the woman loves only
him, the speaker, because he and the man are the
    same person.

5
The interesting question
Is this sonnet about a speaker or is it about
Shakespeare?

My own opinion
  • Positive ()
  • Its a very interesting sonnet, because you dont
know if its just about the speaker or maybe
    about Shakespeare himself!
  • There are many emotions (maybe the emotions of
    Shakespeare)
  • Negative (-)
  • When I first read it, it was hardly to
understand. In order to understand everything it
was necessary to go through it more than only one
time. Especially old English words like thou,
thee, dost etc. are hard to understand at
    first reading the sonnet.
