Lincoln's election as President
1846 CA, UT, NM closed to slavery. South didnt
like it limited rights under the Constitution of
the U.S.
Kansas-Nebraska Act
1850 UT NM decide about slavery. TX paid 10
million for what will be NM.
1852 Propaganda. Book raises awarness of
slavery. Misrepresented South.
Dred Scott Decision
Uncle Tom's Cabin
January 1854 Introduced for new RR route would
repeal the Missouri Compromise establish
popular sovereignty in territory. Plot to turn
territories into slave states? Hmmmmm Put into
law in June.
1854 U.S. wants Cuba. South very interested.
North says No because of slave population.
Cuban annexation abandoned.
Wilmot Proviso
Compromise of 1850
Lawrence, KS Anti slave town. Grand jury
condemned town as traitors. Town ran-sacked by
proslavery posse.
Pottawatomie Massacre John Brown leads raid in
response to Lawrence. Dress rehearsal for
Harpers Ferry.
1856 Dispute between pro anti slave factions
Residents forcefully vote illegally (came from
MO) Emigrant sociteies set up as migrants with
animals, weapons, etc
1857 Sued for freedom based on living in
Illinois Wisconsin (anti-slave areas) case
appealed to Supreme Court.
  • Two basic decisions
  • Was Scott a citizen?
  • Did residence in free state/territory make him
    free even though he returned to Missouri (slave
    state)?

Supreme Court ruled NO!
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
1858 Topic slavery in territories. Lincoln
(free-soiler) slavery is immoral believed only
legislation would kill slavery.
Since a territory couldnt vote to exclude
slavery before it became a state popular
sovereignty didnt mean anything there.
Freeport Doctrine in practice, people could get
around Dred Scott ruling. Debates widened rift
between North and South.
Douglas (Dem) Popular sovereignty believed
slavery would be phased out.
"Bleeding Kansas"
1859 supposed to be a slave uprising total
failure. Brown hanged for treason.
