Title: Graphs

1
  • Graphs
  • TOPEC-Mrs. Fought

2
Graphs Data Tables
  • When to use
  • Bar Graphs
  • Line Graphs
  • Scatter Plot
  • Pie Charts

3
Bar Graphs
  • Use when comparing data quickly
  • Does Jupiter have more moons than Pluto?
  • Use to identify trends
  • time spent sleeping per day of the week

6
Line Graphs
  • Use when controlling one variable and seeing how
    it compares to another variable.
  • example an experiment where you measure the
growth of a plant over time.

9
Scatter Plot Graphs
  • Use like a line graph, but the points are not
    connected.
  • Shows trends in data, or correlation, either
    positive, negative, or no correlation.

Pie Charts
  • Used to show part of the whole, or what
    percentage is represented.
  • Example What is the favorite kind of movie in
    Mrs. Foughts class?

Labeling Graphs
  • Use standard fonts and consistent labels and
    terms.
  • The key elements of labeling include terms,
    labels, title font.
  • Be sure to include units on x and y axis.
  • Include data table
  • Always have a title on your graph. Usually the
title will be The Dependence of ____ on _____

  • In this graph, there are a number of flaws
  • The ratio of the heights of bars within each
category does not reflect the actual ratio. For
example, compare the ratio of the heights of bar
in the housing category with those in food or
    transportation.
  • There is an implied precision that is
unrealistic. Do you think that the average can be
    estimated to the nearest penny!
  • The percentages are computed incorrectly. A
doubling of costs is only a 100 increase.
  • Too many ducks'.

Not a Misleading Graph
29
Misleading Graph
Data is the same. But the Scale has changed.

Rules for Graphs
  • 1. Have a proper title
  • 2. Have correct units and labels on X and Y axis
  • 3. X and Y axis are to scale
  • 4. Use a ruler
  • 5. Have a key
  • Plot points correctly
