Title: Chemistry and Matter
1Chemistry and Matter
2What is chemistry?
The science that deals with the materials of the
universe and the changes that these materials
undergo.
3What is Matter?
- The stuff of which the universe is composed.
4What is Matter?
5What is Matter?
- Stuff that
- occupies space
6What is Matter?
- Stuff composed
- of tiny particles
- called atoms
7What is air?
- Does it take up space?
- Does it have mass?
Air is composed of different gas molecules
Nitrogen 78 Oxygen 21 Argon 0.9 Carbon
Dioxide 0.03 Neon 0.002 Helium 0.0005
8Matter
- Compounds substances with 2 or more different
types of atoms bound in a particular way. - Molecule more than one atom stuck together.
Can be a compound or an element. - Examples?
9(No Transcript)
10Elements
- Atoms that are the same form elemental substances
and sometimes form molecules. - An element cannot be decomposed into simpler
substances by physical or chemical means. - The atoms that make up an element all have the
same atomic number.
11- Elements contain only atoms of that element and
never any atoms of any other element. - However, compounds always contain atoms of
different elements. - Remember, molecules can be either elements or
compounds.
12States of Matter
- 3 states
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
Maintains volume and shape regarless of location.
Maintains volume, but changes shape to fit the
shape of its container
Doesnt have a fixed volume or shape. It will
uniformly fill whatever container it is in.
