Title: Green and Sustainable Practices at Lyndhurst Historic Site
1Green and Sustainable Practices at Lyndhurst
Historic Site
2Energy Star
- 1992 U.S E. PA. Introduced Energy Star as
voluntary labeling program. Computers and
monitors were 1st products labeled. - 1995 Program expanded to include office equipment
and residential heating cooling. - In 2008 alone Americans avoided greenhouse gas
emissions equivalent to those from 29 million
cars all while saving 19 billion on their
utility bills. - Today consumers of all kinds seek out label out
to save money.
3Green Seal
- Non-Profit founded in 1989, it provides
science-based environmental certification. - Certifies everything from coffee filters,
cleaning products, and paint to air chillers. - This logo can be found on-line and in retail
outlets such as Office Depot and Lowes Home
Improvement Store. - By testing and certifying according to
International Organization for Standardization
(ISO 14020 and 14024 - the international
standards for ecolabelling), Green Seal
certification is recognized and accepted in 158
out of 195 countries in the world.
4EPA Water Sense
- Pertains to faucets, toilets, urinals, shower
heads , irrigation and new construction. - Products that bear this logo must be 20 more
efficient than average products in same category. - By replacing outdated faucets and toilets the
average household could save approximately 500
gallons of water per year. - Cutting down on water use also reduces the amount
of energy needed to heat hot water or bring it up
from a well into the house.
5Green Guard Environmental Institute
- Pertains to indoor air quality.
- Certifies products and processes for their low
chemical emissions and low toxicity. - Product certification program for low emitting
interior building materials, furnishings, and
finish systems. - Building certification program for newly
constructed multifamily and commercial properties
that follow best practice guidelines for
preventing mold during the design, construction
and ongoing operations.
6Forest Stewardship Council
- The FSC is an international organization with
headquarters in Bonn, Germany and offices in
Washington D. C. - The FSC logo signifies that paper and wood
products, such as lumber, furniture and flooring
have been harvested using certified sustainable
standards. - Trusted environmental organizations including
Greenpeace, National Wildlife Federation, The
Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, and World
Wildlife Fund all support and encourage FSC
certification.
7Eco Logo
- A founding member of the Global Eco-Labeling
Network (GEN), an association of third-party
environmental performance labeling organizations
dedicated to improving and promoting the
eco-labeling of products and services - Founded in 1988 in Canada this non-profit is
the one of two North American eco-labeling
programs approved by GEN as meeting
internationally recognized ISO 14024
requirements. The other is Green Seal.
8Lyndhursts Plan
- Key personnel include the Director,
Curator/Collections Manager, Maintenance, Office
Manager, Building Grounds, and Restoration
Manager. It is easier to implement changes when
you are part of the planning process. - Researched 3rd Party Certification Standards and
looked for applications at the site. - Created a Statement of Sustainability Principles
Practices that identified areas where we would
focus our efforts, understating that this
document is fluid and will change over time. This
gets to tracking and monitoring.
9Principles Practices
- Demonstrating institutional practices that
promote sustainability, including measures to
increase efficiency and use of renewable
resources, and to decrease the production of
waste both in Lyndhursts own operations and in
those of its suppliers. - Developing planning tools to enable comparative
analysis of sustainability implications and to
support long term economic, environmental and
socially responsible decision making. - Establishing indicators for sustainability that
will enable monitoring, reporting, and continuous
improvement. - Recycling and Waste Management programs that
reduce the amount waste generated by the site
that goes into the land fill. - Environmentally Preferable Procurement by
purchasing certified green products where
possible and items that are made from recycled
materials.
10Current Practices
- Installing florescent and other energy efficient
light bulbs in all the buildings and fixtures on
the site. - Using third party certified green cleaning
products, paper goods, and soap for all restrooms
on the site. - Participating in the Westchester Countys
recycling program by separating all debris
generated by site into containers that reduce
amount delivered to the land fill. - Replacing inefficient equipment such as boilers,
hot water heaters and other appliances with
Energy Star rated ones. - Replacing fixtures such as toilets and faucets
that meet the EPA Water Sense standard. - Planning and designing renovation and restoration
projects that incorporate sustainable building
practices where possible.
