1
Biology The Nature of Life
2
What is Biology?
  • The study of life!

3
What is Alive?
4
Biology is based on central ideas.
  • Living things evolve over time.
  • Organisms reproduce and pass on traits to
    offspring.
  • Form fits function an organisms structures and
    how it works are related
  • Organisms develop from simple
    to complex.
  • Energy is constantly cycled
    in the living world.

5
Whats Alive?
  • How can we distinguish between living and
nonliving things, such as a radiolarian (left)
    and a snowflake (right)?
  • A radiolarian is a tiny living thing that is
covered with a glasslike shell and lives in the
ocean. A snowflake is a crystal made of frozen
    water.

6
Traits of all living things
7
Made up of cells
8
Reproduce and pass on traits to offspring
9
Based on a universal genetic code

The Six Kingdoms of Life
  • Kingdom Eubacteria
  • Kingdom Archaebacteria
  • Kingdom Protista
  • Kingdom Fungi
  • Kingdom Plantae
  • Kingdom Animalia

19
Kingdom Eubacteria
  • Single-celled
  • Prokaryotic (no nucleus)
  • True bacteria

20
Kingdom Archaebacteria
  • Ancient Bacteria (still prokaryotic)
  • Live in extreme environments
  • Many anaerobic (dont need oxygen) and some cant
    live where oxygen is present

21
Kingdom Protista
  • Eukaryotic (true nucleus)
  • Single-cell
  • Some form colonies

22
Kingdom Fungi
  • Multicellular
  • Eukaryotic
  • Heterotrophic (must eat food)
  • Include yeasts, slime molds, mildew, and mushrooms

23
Kingdom Plantae
  • Multicellular
  • Autotrophic (makes own food)
  • Eukaryotic
  • Mosses, ferns, conifers (cone bearers), and
    angiosperms (flowering plants)

24
Kingdom Animalia
  • Multicellular
  • Heterotrophic
  • Eukaryotic
