Newton Catalogue re-design

• Based on XML and more flexible than previous
  versions but still limited by lack of APIs.
• Functionality enhanced through local scripting
• Viewing locations on a floor plan of the UL main
  building
• Easier stack requests from individual records
• Stable links for incorporating records into Web
  pages and booklists
• Doesnt yet solve the problem of multiple
  catalogues but resource discovery software is
  being procured to address this and replace the
  Newton Universal Catalogue

Library Toolbox

• iGoogle widget for Newton users can log in with
  Raven or library barcode and view all of their
  library memberships, books on loan, requests, and
  search the catalogues
• Facebook application
• Newton toolbars for Firefox and IE7
• OpenSearch plug-ins for Firefox and IE7
• Links to reference management tools currently
  Zotero and EndNote but others (including
  Mendeley) may be supported
• and links to RSS feeds for general library
  news, new electronic resources, trials and
  science resources

Voyager

• Current version is 7.0.2
• Test server upgraded last week to 7.1.1
• No decision yet on Christmas vacation upgrade to
  7.1.1 which will be extensively tested over the
  next couple of months
• 7.1.1 fixes a number of bugs but no major changes
  to functionality
• The new generation replacement for Voyager is
  still a long way off beta version mid-late 2011
  at the earliest

Raven/Shibboleth access to electronic resources

• No Athens passwords issued since Sept 2008
• Raven-Athens gateway withdrawn 1 Aug 2009
• Most publishers are Shibboleth-compliant and
  enabled for Univ of Cambridge users but some are
  not
• Non-compliant resources are being routed through
  the ULs EZproxy server, itself
  Shibboleth-compliant
• which is way users are advised to go through
  the ejournals_at_cambridge and eresources_at_cambridge
  A-Z lists

Raven/Shibboleth issues

• Many publisher sites still have an Athens login
  button for institutions that continue to use it
• A few publishers claimed to have set up Cambridge
  access but either change the settings and failed
  to tell anyone or didnt test it mainly
  resolved
• eduserv were until recently still listing
  Cambridge as an Athens institution and responding
  to failed logins with an incomprehensible message
  also resolved
• Publishers labelling Shibboleth logins
  differently often Institutional login or Log in
  via your institution but occasionally Shibboleth.
  No consistency in labelling.
• Problems reported as Shibboleth/Raven-related are
  issues with status or subscriptions.
• Queries should be directed to lib-raven_at_lists.cam.
  ac.uk and not to the UCS
