1
Building Effective Interpersonal Relationships
2
Types of professional relationships
  • Management and employees
  • Employees and other employees
  • Employees and clients or the public
  • The type of interpersonal relationship you have
with these people will be largely determined by
your role that you play with them.

3
Management employees
  • These relationships are influenced by the
culture, philosophy and size of an organization.
  • Morale is boosted, and the mood or tone of the
workplace are improved when these relationships
    are positive.
  • Open and direct communication are the goals here.
  • This makes businesses operate more efficiently
    and successfully.

4
Employees other employees
  • Should be working in cooperation with one
    another.
  • Should be supportive.
  • Good relationships here add much to the enjoyment
    of your job.

5
Employees clients/ the public
  • One-to-one communication determines success.
  • This has a huge effect on business.
  • The main purpose of positive employee-customer
relationships is to create goodwill and a feeling
    of loyalty.
  • Tips for these relationships no matter how
irritated or angry you feel, use these tips for
    phone contact-
  • Smile to put a smile in your voice.
  • Keep a childs picture by the phone.
  • Take breaks for brisk walks, drinks of water,
    etc.
  • Have some key words to help you. Studies show
that using the word calm can produce that
    effect.

6
social relationships being in a club
  • Three important relationships in this context
    are
  • Leadership and members
  • Members and other members
  • Members and the public.
  • Clubs social relationships are special because
they often bring together people of different
ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds who have come
together to accomplish a common goal, and who
    have common interests.

7
Relationships between leaders members
  • Must include personal integrity if goals are to
    be accomplished.
  • The first guideline for any organizational member
is to set aside his or her own personal interests
and focus on the group goal.

8
Members and other members
  • The main purpose of member-to-member
relationships is not to benefit the individual-
even though this is a common side-effect.

9
Members the public
  • Each member of an organization serves as the
    groups ambassador, or representative.
  • Say something good, or say nothing at all is
good advice for members who want their
    organization to be a success.

10
Characteristics of productive interpersonal
communication
  • Openness
  • Empathy
  • Equality
  • Supportiveness
  • Positiveness

11
Openness
  • Willingness to share ideas and feelings
    appropriately.
  • Willingness to listen to others
  • Willingness to reflect on and adapt communication

12
Empathy
  • Involves feeling with rather than for someone.
  • In other words, you are putting yourself in
someone elses position and seeing the world
    through his or her eyes.

13
Equality
  • This does not mean sameness, but rather embraces
    personal and cultural differences.
  • It means that regardless of title or status,
individuals have equal respect, rights, and
    opportunity.
  • It asserts that individuals, regardless of status
or ability, have equal dignity as human beings.

14
Supportiveness
  • Caring about and respecting one another.
  • For example, a teacher may disapprove of a
students behavior, but still care deeply about
him or her, and do everything possible to help
    that person reach goals.

15
Positiveness
  • This basically means encouraging others.
  • Being enthusiastic.

16
You need to integrate your interpersonal skills
with your task skills-
  • Integrating means to blend things so that they
    function together as a whole.
