Seed Program To Advance Research Collaboration
(SPARC)
  • Goal Catalyze development of large
    interdisciplinary research projects
  • Projects must target a single external RFP that
solicits at least 1 million in new research
    funding for USU.
  • Recruits and supports additional research
    faculty, postdoctoral researchers, or PhD
    students to the USU campus.
  • Eligibility Same as RC, but must engage faculty

Facilities Administrative (FA) Costs of
Research
  • Indirect or FA costs of research are real costs
that cant be easily billed to one project.
Examples include the costs of administrative
efforts to support research, environmental health
and safety, facilities operations, and equipment
that is shared among many researchers.
  • USUs FA rate is negotiated annually with the
federal government, based on actual research
costs. Because indirect costs are real expenses,
research budgets should always include FA costs.
  • FA is proportionally recovered as expenses are
made on a project it does not represent new
    money.
  • The State allows USU to invest recovered FA to
    build research infrastructure and capacity.
