    single unit.
  • In 800 A.D. Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne
    Emperor of the West, a region later known as the
    Holy Roman Empire.
  • The map shows the lands that Charlemagne
    controlled when he was crowned Emperor of Rome.

  • Charlemagne learned on the battlefield at an
    early age the importance of strong leadership.
  • Charlemagne also learned the importance of close
    links between secular power and the Roman
    Catholic Church.
  • Charlemagne is also known as Charles the Great.
  • Charlemagne was among the greatest military
    leaders of the Middle Ages.

  • Charlemagne made a series of military campaigns
    to expand the power of the Franks.
  • Charlemagne had to conduct several fierce
    campaigns and capture a Saxon chieftain before he
    could impose his rule.
  • He defeated a Lombard king and became ruler of
    the Kingdom of the Lombards, which included the
    northern half of Italy.
  • Charlemagne's Empire united all Christian lands
    of western Europe and increased the power of the
    Catholic Church.

  • Charlemagne contracted a lung infection and
    developed a high fever.
  • He tried to cure himself by taking only liquids
    but after an illness of seven days he died.
  • The year was 814 A.D. and he was seventy-two
    years old.
  • He is buried under the Dome of the Cathedral at
    Aachen, dressed in imperial robes.
