4 Behaviour Based Safety Vehicle Driving
Objective
- Programme aiming at increasing the safety during
road freight transport by positively influencing
the behaviour of the drivers through observation,
coaching and communication.
5 Behaviour Based Safety Vehicle Driving
- Process
- Transport company develops BBS implementation
plan - Selection / training of observers
- Individual BBS training of all drivers by
observers (observation, coaching, communication) - Training observations/reports kept in filing
system - Drivers can consult their individual report
- KPIs are monitored and collected in database
(accidents, fuel consumption, maintenance costs,
fines) - BBS results and other KPIs trigger improvement
programme - Checking of BBS implementation through SQAS
assessment

7 Behaviour Based Safety Vehicle Driving
BBS Training
- one-to-one / interactive
- on the road manoeuvring
- all aspects of driving
- not less than half a day
- every 1 to 3 years
8 Behaviour Based Safety Vehicle Driving
BBS Trainer Qualifications
- - Thorough knowledge of transport specifics
- - Excellent safety record
- Objective and independent
- - Interpersonal skills
- - Good reporting skills
9 Behaviour Based Safety Vehicle Driving
Training Agenda 1. Verbal introduction
- schedule of the day -
informal conversation - reflection
about causes of accidents 2. Circle check -
outside vehicle - inside vehicle 3. Driving
- conditions and situations -
observation / behaviour skills 4. Manoeuvring 5.
Debriefing - positive critique with guidance and
advice - areas for improvement - overall
evaluation

What do we envision?
- Standard requirement in chemical transport -
renewable - Standard approach and consistency
- Leveraged best practices
- High quality of observations
- Program independent and not limited in time
- Industry Approach - CEFIC/ECTA/EPCA
- BBS may fulfil the EU Directive relating to
driver training
Improved transportation safety performance
