Milestone of implementation
4
Why is WebSAMS not used?
  • WebSAMS is not open to students because of
  • security concern
  • low performance with multiple access
  • Different posts needed for different ECA
  • We allow students to choose only one ECA from
    each category for balanced participation
  • External activities cannot be handled by WebSAMS
  • We have ECA chairmen manage membership for their
    own activities
  • We need an e-mail contact list for each ECA

5
Our traditions objectives
  • Chairmen assigned with responsibilities to manage
    membership themselves
  • Students should take initiative to report
activities inside school and outside school
  • Minimum workload for teachers and clerical staff
    for processing the records
  • Records could be used for easy browsing and
producing various forms of product such as ECA
    Reports and Testimonials.

6
Our solutions
  • Development of web platform to meet customized
    needs
  • Technical specifications
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server
  • Running IIS, ASP pages
  • The platform provides various functions not
provided by WebSAMS, SLP is just one of the module

7
EMBs SEED project
  • Enhance our understanding of the concepts and
principles of OLE and requirement of SLP in NSS
  • Provides opportunities of sharing experience on
implementing OLE and SLP in other schools
  • Participate in testing SLP prototype provided by
    EMB

8
Key features of SLP
  • Students have access to their profile
  • Personal information cab be imported from WebSAMS
  • Teachers can view the updated information of
    students
  • Cater for both school activities and
    non-school activities
  • Students can update information/reflection at any
    time
  • Teachers can enter comments and make interactive
    communication with the students
  • Categorization to ensure balance participation
  • Last output at students own discretion
  • Hyperlink to the students achievement
  • Auto data back up function
  • Validation by teachers

9
Enhancement of SLP
  • Transformed to meet the needs of SLP in NSS
  • Reorganize activities inside school
  • Define the roles in each programme
  • Enrichment of records details
  • Improve validation checking procedures
  • Allow students to write reflections and plans

10
Reorganization of Activities

  • School team
  • Media and publications
  • Class associations
  • Student Association prefects
  • Guidance and Career related programmes
  • Internal competitions
  • Programmes outside school

11
Definition of Roles
  • Each programme is associated with roles defined
    by teacher in-charge.
  • Teachers in-charge will associate each role with
components of learning areas and attributes to be
    developed.
  • Example 1 athlete and student helper are two
    different roles in Sports Day
  • Example 2 subject monitor and form captain

12
Enrichment of record details
  • Duration (start date, end date, no of hours)
  • Role (component attributes to be developed)
  • Award obtained
  • Attendance
  • Remarks
  • Students reflections
  • School comments
  • Exemplars (links to photo album.. etc)

13
Validation checking
  • Records validated by teacher in-charge or
    authorized students (e.g. chairmen)
  • Records can only be deleted by the creator.
  • Students can sign at the end of each term to
indicate they have checked and updated their
    profiles.

14
Writing reflection plan
  • Students can write reflections for each programme
    they have participated in (optional).
  • Students are asked to write reflections at end of
a school year, to record their personal growth
through the learning experiences and plan for
    participation in the future.
  • Teachers can give comments on students'
performance based on a set of predefined
    attributes.

  • Simple edit mode of final SLP for students (e.g.
    selecting OLE items)
  • Information of Outside school activities and
    Self-account provided by students
  • Will be launched before September 2007

20
Some important points
  • Students gain ownership of their profile by
    taking initiative to enrich it.
  • Students develop reflective culture under
    guidance from Form Teachers.
  • Records entered by students need to be rectified
by staff, clerical support is still necessary.
  • Stand firm on deadlines of updating and
    validating.
  • Staff should be adapted to working with web
    interface rather than hardcopies.
  • Strong support from technical staff for importing
/ exporting data and creating report templates
    for printing various reports.
