  • In-Line Inspection Maintenance Capability
  • R D Projects 2007/08
  • Summary

3
SIG Objectives
  • SIG is a stand alone company set up by Genesis
    OGC / Technip
  • SIG established to develop and operate innovative
technologies to support integrity management from
    Pig trap to Wellhead
  • 3 main product lines for riser pipeline
    integrity
  • Intelligent pigging tethered tractor unit
  • Non-intrusive Mobile ROV / Diver units
  • Non-intrusive Permanent Monitoring Systems
  • Focused on Integrity issues within the Industry
  • Un-piggable pipelines - Deepwater Risers TOLC
    Tendon Inspection
  • Several goals
  • Inspection without Intervention
  • ILI without shutdown

4
Background
  • Products are centred around not limited to -
    GWU
  • First subsea deployment July 2004 Amerada Hess
  • Physics worked client saved 2M
  • Genesis GUL have a joint venture on the subsea
    application
  • ROV Diver systems have proved very effective
  • Clients include - Amerada Hess - Exxon Mobil
    Dana - Shell
  • Since 2004 - progressive development into new
    applications
  • Includes Intelligent pigging
  • Corrosion Monitoring Systems

Experience
6
Guided Ultrasonics
Guided Ultrasonics
Propagation is along and not through the structure
Guided waves reflect off any change in cross
section
7
Guided Ultrasonics
  • Involves entire pipe
  • 100 of volume is inspected
  • It is a rapid screening technique
  • Needs the pipe walls in order to exist
  • Usually exploited at low frequencies (lt100 kHz)
  • Exhibit complicated behaviour
  • Equally sensitive to increase or decrease of
    thickness
  • Amplitude reflection needs to scaled with
    distance
  • Temp of pipe up to 120 Deg C
  • Pressure limitation to 500bar subsea

Defect sizing
  • Focusing is an important advance in defect sizing
  • Transducers excited with slight time delay
  • Allows more accurate circumferential sizing
  • Coupled with the volumetric loss known wall
    thickness
  • The defect severity can be more accurately
    determined
  • Orientation to within 15 Deg can be detected
  • 1 wavelength (50mm) is the best resolution i.e.
defects can be detected - but not sized

Rolled out view of pipe
10
Defect sizing
  • The technique identifies loss of cross section
    symmetry
  • The key is to determine the severity of the wall
    loss
  • i.e. localised loss or general corrosion

Severe
Less severe
  • Assumptions on defect shape have to be made
  • Known failures are well documented
  • Failure mechanisms are well documented

Defect Monitoring

  • Regular monitoring can drive Intelligent pigging
    programmes
  • Modify corrosion inhibitor mix deployment
    method

In-Line Integrity tool
  • Original motivation started with deepwater assets
  • Lack of external access to the riser/pipe
  • Re-think the approach to in-line inspection (ILI)
  • Defects are more subtle to locate size
  • Need amore controlled level of inspection
  • Pipeline systems are more complex to access
  • SIG approach is to offer multiple function
  • Inspection Cleaning Prevention Repair
    (future)

16
In-Line Integrity tool
  • 3 Key Features
  • Bristle tractor technology to access the pipe
  • Guided waves to screen for corrosion
  • High Frequency UT array for sizing defects
  • Key Advantages
  • Designed to work in flow conditions
    (Gas/Multiphase)
  • Little cleaning required integrated into main
    tool
  • Multi-ton pull loads Bi- directional
    capability
  • Maintenance
  • Removes/Agitates deposits at the bottom of the
    pipe
  • Can inject corrosion inhibition as the tool is
    removed
  • Speed is only 2-4m per minute (8-10hrs to TDP)
  • Can negotiate complex geometries 3D bends (1.5D
    possible)

System Overview
21
Atlantis Riser Wet Spools
  • Tested early November 2006

22
Holstein Riser Inspection
  • Non-Intrusive
  • TSA causes no problems with external GUW testing
  • Test limited to joint length due to thread
    connections
  • Permanent units could interface with ACE type of
    system
  • ROV type deployment probably most cost effective
  • Intrusive
  • Think - inspection prevention repair
  • Flexible sections no cause for concern
  • Issues with SIG tool in ID of pipe
  • costly to miniaturise electronics

23
R D Projects
  • Integrity R D Projects for 2007/8
  • Insensys Combined riser / flowline stress
    corrosion system
  • JENTEK Fatigue damage inspection
  • Technip Flexible riser Inspection

24
R D 1 Stress / Corrosion clamp
  • Joint project with Insensys
  • Aim is to develop a joint stress/corrosion system
  • Start with a riser system Atlantis wet spools
  • Progress into a deepwater subsea flowline unit
  • Advantages
  • Cost savings in
  • deployment, hardware data acquisition
  • Correlation of data for better integrity
    assessment
  • Fully remote integrity capability
  • 3 stage development programme
  • Bench unit prototype field unit
  • Funding - 400k for fully operational riser unit

25
R D 3 SCR Pre-crack Inspection
  • Aim is to Inspect SCRs for pre-cracking at welds
  • Using JENTEK Sensors
  • MWM Array (Magnetic Field) Sensors
  • Identifies early fatigue damage in welds
  • Pre-crack fatigue detection and imaging
  • SIG tool will acts as the delivery vehicle
  • Guided waves will position the tool
  • JENTEK SIG agreement will be non-exclusive

26
R D 4 Flexible Riser Inspection
  • Aim is to Inspect the inner carcass pressure
    sheath
  • High resolution acoustic images
  • Only a slight modification to the current design
  • Bristle tractor delivers the inspection head
  • High frequency UT head does 3D mapping
  • Head is positioned at the front of the tractor
  • Fluid slug at the head of the tractor
  • Looking for
  • Gross damage/erosion
  • Separation of inner carcass links
  • Disbonding of pressure sheath

27
Summary
  • Guided Ultrasonics has a valuable role subsea
  • Flexible enough to be deployed from pig trap to
    wellhead
  • Only modification is data interface Deployment
  • Easy integration with subsea Ops little tooling
    required
  • Change in mindset needed by Operators
  • Getting transducers onto new pipe before
    installation !!
  • Development Operations team may have different
    objectives
  • Applications
  • TOLC - SCR / TTR - Deepwater tie backs - TLP
    tendons
  • Goal - Inspection without Intervention !!
