  • These are times of great change and opportunity
in higher education. Universities are autonomous
institutions and I believe they function best
when given increased control over their own
destiny. One part of such increased control is
raising independent income from donations in
order to achieve excellence and add value to core
    funding.Increasing Voluntary Giving to Higher
Education Task Force Report to Government 2004

  • This seeking to fundraise effectively is what
all good charities do. They believe that their
core objectives are worthwhile that their
activity can make the world a better place and
that they are entitled and even obliged to put
themselves into the worlds eye and invite
support. An important part of their mission is to
spread knowledge about the benefits they provide,
and the greater benefits that they would like to
    provide if they could.

  • Academic libraries manage, collect and provide
access to an ever-growing arsenal of information
for an increasing number of users in an
    environment of growing financial constraints.
Libraries employ highly trained and educated
staff, need complex facilities and sophisticated
electronic technologies in order to operate
    successfully.

  • Developing The Case for Support
  • No vice-chancellor is going to divert money
from, say, research into cancer relief or
teaching business studies to improving the
physical and contractual position of university
curators without being convinced by a strong
    academic and business case.

  • Entrepreneurial librarians will be much in
demand in the future to use their vision, ideas
and courage to experiment with new and creative
ways to fund their librariesLibrarians will need
to be excellent and effective communicators
within their communities to state their purposes
and needs and gather support for their mission
and their budgets. Fundraising for libraries
will continue to grow in importance and
librarians need to prepare themselves for success
    in these essential development activities.
