Title: Instrument Cluster Visibility Study

Instrument Cluster Visibility Study
Background The display technology of today allow
large areas of color graphic content. To the
driver, the instrument cluster is the central
information area in the truck. Introducing a
fully graphic instrument cluster with virtual
gauges challenges key areas in ergonomics, HMI
and hardware performance. Scope The thesis work
shall highlight the maturity level of graphic
displays from a hardware and ergonomic
perspective. Key technologies of today shall be
evaluated along with an outlook in to the future.
The work could be split up and shall address
these two main areas Hardware maturity.
Determine the current status of graphic displays
for automotive use. Evaluate the aspects of
leading technologies in terms of performance vs.
cost. The installation in a truck imposes high
demands of durability and must be operational
under a wide temperature range. Future technology
roadmaps shall also be included. Impact on
driver ergonomics. It is imperative that safety
critical information is visible to the driver at
all times. The visibility in different lighting
conditions and temperatures may vary. The viewing
angle imposes constraints on the installation of
the instrument cluster and may also affect
visibility greatly. Reflections resulting of the
protective lens is a key factor to look into.
Design input to the HMI of the instrument should
be included depending on the outcome of the work
above. The thesis should include the results
from a workshop activity where a demonstration
installation is subjected to a group of test
people. Time plan Start in mid 2006 Desired
profile of applicants The work is suitable for
one to two master students depending on the final
scope agreed upon. A good background is found in
HMI and/ or ergonomics, with Electrical or
physical engineering as a base. Location Volvo
