PROBLEM / ISSUES PROGRAMMATIC
IMPACT ACTION
G
- Codes 400 and 500 are discussing ways to contain
this problem - Expedite thermal performance evaluation of
optical system - Conduct overall ICESat development and personnel
assessment. - Develop revised mission schedule
- Latest GLAS completion schedule causes impact to
LRD.
- GLAS component rework cycles continue to erode
GLAS integration and test schedule longer GLAS
integration effort needed - GLAS CPT only partially completed. Some problems
under investigation. Instrument scientists
struggling to interpret the data.
- CURRENT STATUS
- GLAS on proposed re-plan schedule for June 17
delivery and subsequent 12/16 LRD. Schedule to
be presented to HQ / Code Y in mid-March. - Launch manifest indicates NET 12/19/02 LRD
- GLAS remains on schedule for June 17 delivery.
Code Y PMC rescheduled for May 3. CLOSED

PROBLEM/ISSUES PROGRAMMATIC
IMPACT ACTION
Y
GLAS boresite stability does not meet mission
performance requirements
Fundamental measurements may be compromised if
behavior persists on orbit.
- Hold mini-peer review on calibration results
- Get AETD and systems involvement in development
of troubleshooting plan.
- CURRENT STATUS
- Peer Review held
- Retest conducted preliminary results look
favorable with major errors traceable to set-up
issues. Detailed data analysis results look
promising. - Additional analysis initiated on the telescope
assembly. - Test plan defined.
- Plan in place to validate requires completion of
environmental test program.
5GLAS IT PROBLEMS IN WORK LIDAR OPERATION ICESat

DATE ESTAB COMPL 12/17 6/15
PROBLEM/ISSUES PROGRAMMATIC
IMPACT ACTION
Y
Intermittent energy monitor on green laser
Potential compromise on Etalon operation and data
reduction
- Investigate root cause
- Investigate alternate means for Etalon operation
and data reduction
- CURRENT STATUS
- Several troubleshooting tests conducted,
inconclusive results. - Alternate Etalon operation algorithms in
development. - Problem understood and board modification
solution verified on the engineering model board.
Alternative (baseline) software approaches being
investigated and validated. - Software fix to be validated in T / V testing

IMPACT ACTION
Y
- Present overguide requirements to Code Y.
- Generate cost / schedule impacts
- Pursue budget approval through POP-02 process.
- Cannot meet late 2002 LRD without additional
funding. - Potential additional cost and schedule impact to
late 2002 LRD
- ICESat is unfunded beyond 5 / 31 / 02
- Cost / schedule impact of SN001 Laser and other
anomalies
- CURRENT STATUS
- Schedule and cost requirements ready to be
presented to HQ / Code Y in mid-March. - Code Y PMC rescheduled for May 3.
- Working with Code Y to determine plan for
providing additional mission funding. Plan may
require substantial FY02 carryover and FY03
emergency operating plan submittal.

Generation report was approved by Headquarters on
4 / 9 / 01. The total mission package included
ICESat, CATSAT, DPAF, and launch vehicle. Both
ICESat and CATSAT meet the 8m2 guideline by
significant margins. ICESat is 3.9m2 and CATSAT
0.9m2. ICESat will reenter in 15 years, which is
well under the 25 year guideline. Disposal
Option Assessment Controlled Reentry Not
practical -- 240kg additional fuel and 6 months
delay Safe Orbit Not feasible -- same as
re-entry Shuttle Recovery ICESat polar orbit
not accessible to the shuttle also spacecraft
design not manned-flight rated Expect no changes
when CHIPSAT data becomes available
