PROBLEM / ISSUES PROGRAMMATIC
IMPACT ACTION
R
- Codes 400 and 500 are discussing ways to contain
this problem - Expedite thermal performance evaluation of
optical system
- Latest GLAS completion schedule causes negative
slack to the June 1, 2002 LRD.
- GLAS component rework cycles continue to erode
GLAS integration and test schedule longer GLAS
integration effort needed - Launch manifest uncertainty
- CURRENT STATUS
- Latest GLAS delivery schedule slips delivery date
to January 28. Discussions with Code 500
management are underway to apply specific
solutions to observed problems. - GLAS instrument assembly complete for first
baseline CPT scheduled for late October. - Project and AETD management are actively pursuing
options for earliest GLAS optical stability
evaluation in thermal vacuum.

R
- Request additional overguide funding after new
LRD is determined.
- Cannot meet proposed 6 / 1 / 02 LRD without
additional funding.
- ICESat is unfunded beyond 3 / 31 / 02.
- CURRENT STATUS
- 13.6M POP 01-1 overguide now reduced to 11.9M
due to cost cap on launch vehicle delay penalty.
Additional 7.6M required in FY02 to meet 6 / 1 /

Final Estimate Final Orbital Debris
Generation report was approved by Headquarters on
4 / 9 / 01. The total mission package included
ICESat, CATSAT, DPAF, and launch vehicle. Both
ICESat and CATSAT meet the 8m2 guideline by
significant margins. ICESat is 3.9m2 and CATSAT
0.9m2. ICESat will reenter in 15 years, which is
well under the 25 year guideline. Disposal
Option Assessment Controlled Reentry Not
practical -- 240kg additional fuel and 6 months
delay Safe Orbit Not feasible -- same as
re-entry Shuttle Recovery ICESat polar orbit
not accessible to the shuttle also spacecraft
design not manned-flight rated Expect no changes
when CHIPSAT data becomes available
