• Became captain of a Spanish ship company that
  supplied for long voyages
• First opportunity for exploring, so Vespucci
  looked for new worlds and not fame
• 1497 Vespucci claimed to have found New World
• Not much was recorded or known
• about this voyage

Second and Third Journey

• Second 1499
• Alonso de Ojeda also as a captain
• First voyage anyone took purposely to the New
  World
• Explored Caribbean and northeastern coast of
  South America
• Third 1503
• Explored again many islands
• in the Caribbean

The Americas

• Returned to Spain in 1503 and told stories to be
  put on the maps
• Mapmaker suggested naming New World America
  after Vespucci
• Martin Waldseemuller (German Mapmaker) was the
  first to put the name on a map
• Became popular after put on
• Waldseemullers map before
• they realized Columbus discovered it
