FINDINGS OF DEPRESSIO BIPARIETALIS CIRCUMSCRIPTA
IN THE HISTORICAL OSSEOUS MATERIAL Blanka

Bavor     INTRODUCTION In the literature, the
pathologic local thinning of lamina externa and
mainly of the diploic layer of the parietal skull
bones is often described as a "depressio
biparietalis circumscripta" or biparietal
thinning. This abnormality has interested
pathologists as a disease accompanying old age.
It is slowly progressive over the
years.   MATERIAL AND METHODS The collection of
647 adult dry skulls of both sexes and 98 child
skulls dating from 13th-18th centuries (Broumov
Ossuary, Czech Republic) was examinated for the
presence of depressio biparietalis circumscripta.
All positive findings have been documented by
digital camera Camedia 3030 ZOOM, Olympus. In the
one positive case (adult female skull, No B174),
conventinal x-rays and computerized tomographic
(CT) examination were performed.   RESULTS Three
typical cases (2 females and 1 male) /0.46/ of
depressio biparietalis circumscripta were
diagnosed among adult skulls. In the skulls of
children and adolescents no finding of this
anomaly was observed.   CONCLUSION 1.      In the
Broumov Ossuary dry skull collection, the
depressio biparietalis circumscripta was seen in
adult dry skulls only. 2.      Three cases
(0.46) - 2 female and 1 male - were
observed. 3.      In the adult female with the
large depressio biparietalis circumscripta
finding, the diagnosis was verified with x-rays
and CT skull examination.
