  • one X chromosome is partly or completely missing
  • 23rd chromosome pair controls sex hormones and
    without an X, those hormones are missing

Causes
  • causes of Turner Syndrome are unknown

Major Symptoms/Effects
  • affects only females
  • stunted growth
  • no puberty
  • no sex hormones
  • infertility

Minor Symptoms/Effects
  • learning disabilities
  • hearing loss
  • obesity
  • heart, kidney, thyroid disorders
  • low hairline
  • shield-shaped chest
  • webbing of skin on neck

Diagnosis
  • 1/3 within 6 weeks of birth
  • 1/3 during childhood
  • 1/3 when supposed to go through puberty
  • occurs in about 1 in 2500 females (.04)
  • 2 of fetuses carrying babies with Turner
    Syndrome are miscarries

Treatment / Prognosis
  • plastic surgery for physical abnormalities
  • hormone estrogen for puberty
  • growth hormone for height
  • support groups for self-esteem
  • normal life expectancy
  • lead normal, independent, productive lives
