PUBERTY!
  • What is puberty???
  • A period of time when males and females become
    physically able to reproduce.
  • Occurs during ADOLESCENCE which is a time of
physical, mental, emotional, and social changes

3
  • Why does this happen?
  • Puberty occurs as a result of the release of
HORMONES. The male hormone, TESTOSTERONE, and the
female hormones ESTROGEN, and PROGESTERONE are
responsible for the physical, emotional, and
    social changes that occur.

4
What happens?
  • Physical changes that occur in males
  • Production of gametes- reproductive cell produced
by the gonadstakes the form of SPERM
  • Increased production of the male hormone,
    TESTOSTERONE.
  • Enlargement of penis and testes.
  • Voice changes (deepened voice)
  • Growth of body hair.

5
What happens
  • Physical changes in females.
  • Development of breasts
  • Menstruation cycle begins
  • Growth of body hair
  • Increased height/ weight

6
Mental changes
  • Brain reaches adult size and weight
  • COGNITION-the act or process of knowing,
    including both awareness and judgment.
  • Males and females are able to predict outcomes of
    many situations
  • Ability to think logically, or reason things out
    increases.
  • Able to look beyond themselves to understand
    anothers point of view.

7
Emotional Changes
  • Many teens feel like puberty is being on a roller
    coaster
  • Emotions and feelings go up and down quickly.
  • May feel on top of the world one day and down in
    the dumps the next day.

8
Social changes.
  • Friendship and peer acceptance become very
    important.
  • Difficulty communicating.
  • Peers may challenge what you stand for , what you
believe, and what you think is right or wrong.

9
Male reproductive system
  • Hormones released by the pituitary gland
stimulate the testes to produce the male sex
    hormone.TESTOSTERONE
  • Testosterone causes the production of SPERM, the
    male reproductive cell.

10
  • Testes-
  • Also known as testicles.
  • Male reproductive glands that produce sperm cells
    and testosterone.
  • Produce sperm at rate of 100 million per day.

11
  • Scrotum-
  • Sac like pouch that holds the testes (outside of
the body) and helps regulate their temperature.
  • If body temp. rises, muscles of scrotum relax,
lowering testes away from body. If body
temp.drops then muscles contract bringing them
    closer.

12
  • Penis-
  • Male sex organ used for urination and
    reproduction.
  • Attached to trunk of body just above the testes.
  • Composed of spongy tissue that contains many
blood vessels. As a result of increased blood
flow, penis becomes enlarged and erect

13
  • Epididymis-
  • After sperm are produced in the seminiferous
tubules, they move to the epididymis.
  • It is a comma shaped structure along the surface
of the testes where the sperm mature.

14
  • Vas deferens
  • 2 long, thin tubes that act as a passageway for
sperm and a place for sperm storage.
  • They are each about 18 inches long.

15
  • As sperm move through the vas deferens, they are
combined with a fluid produced by the seminal
    vesicle.
  • The fluid is rich in sugar that nourishes sperm
    and helps them move.

16
  • The prostate gland is a gland that produces a
fluid that helps keep the sperm alive.
  • The prostate gland is located beneath the bladder
    and surrounds the urethra.
  • Cowpers glands are located beneath the prostate
gland and secrete a clear, lubricating fluid into
    the urethra.

17
  • URETHRA
  • The urethra is a passageway in which both semen
and urine leave the body. http//www.kidshealth.or

18
CARE OF THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM.
  • Involves cleanliness, protection, and
    self-examination.
  • Males should shower daily completely cleansing
    the penis and the scrotum.
  • Perform testicular self examinations
  • Testicular cancer is one of the most common in
    young males
  • Should check for lumps or tenderness

19
  • Seek medical attention when you show signs of an
    infection
  • Practice abstinence from sex

20
Potential problems of the male reproductive system
  • Hernia
  • Occurs when part of an organ pushes t through an
opening of a membrane or muscle that usually
    contains the organ.
  • Common hernia of male reproductive system is the
inguinal hernia, this is a weak spot in the
abdominal wall of the abdomen near top of
scrotum. Part of intestine can push through
  • Surgery is usually necessary

21
  • Sterility- a condition in which a person is
    unable to reproduce.
  • Can be a result of producing too few sperm.
  • Sterility can arise as a result of smoking,
exposure to certain chemicals, complications of
an STD, or malfunction of one of the internal
    male reproductive organs.

22
  • Cancer-uncontrolled growth of cells.
  • Prostate gland is often a cancer site in older
    males.
  • Prostate cancer is the second highest incidence
    of cancer in males.
  • Cancer of the testes occurs most frequently
between the ages of 15- 35 in males in the U.S.
