3
What is IPV6?
  • IPv6 fixes a number of problems in IPv4, such as
the limited number of available IPv4 addresses.
It also adds many improvements to IPv4 in areas
such as routing and network auto-configuration.
IPv6 is expected to gradually replace IPv4, with
the two coexisting for a number of years during a
    transition period. -http//www.ipv6.org/

4
Advantages
  • Restoration of the end-to-end Internet model
  • Larger number of addresses
  • New Node Discovery Architecture
  • Stateless Autoconfiguration
  • Enhancements to Mobile IPv6 routing

5
Addressing
  • IPV6 addresses are normally written as eight
    groups of four hexadecimal digits
  • 20010db885a308d313198a2e03707334
  • If one or more four-digit groups is 0000, the
zeros may be omitted and replaced with two
    colons().
  • For example 20010db80000000000000000142857
ab can be shortened to 20010db8142857ab.

6
Deployment
  • US Government Sectors will be running IPV6 by
    summer 2008
  • The One Laptop per Child program will use IPV6
    (several million hosts very quickly)
  • Others as needed IPV6 will coincide for IPV4 for
a few years forecasts suggest IPV4 address
space will be exhausted by 2011.

7
Challenges
  • LeMaster alleged that at this point there is no
clear guidance as to how a federal agency should
implement IPv6 and ensure that it is secure. -

  • Since there is very little ROI, getting
organizations to switch is the hardest part
