Title: Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up

1
Will the Real Jesus Please
Stand Up?
  • Jesus Bible-Belt Preacher

2
  • Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came
to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, "Why do your
disciples break the tradition of the elders? They
don't wash their hands before they eat!" Jesus
replied, "And why do you break the command of God
for the sake of your tradition? For God said,
'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who
curses his father or mother must be put to
death.' But you say that if a man says to his
father or mother, 'Whatever help you might
otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted
to God,' he is not to 'honor his father' with it

3
  • Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of
your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right
when he prophesied about you "'These people
honor me with their lips, but their hearts are
far from me. They worship me in vain their
teachings are but rules taught by men.'" Jesus
called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and
understand. What goes into a man's mouth does
not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his
mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean'"

4
  • Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do
you know that the Pharisees were offended when
they heard this?" He replied, "Every plant that
my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled
up by the roots. Leave them they are blind
guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both
will fall into a pit." Peter said, "Explain the
parable to us." "Are you still so dull?" Jesus
asked them. "Don't you see that whatever enters
the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of
the body? But the things that come out of the
mouth come from the heart, and these make a man
    'unclean'

5
  • For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder,
    adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false
testimony, slander. These are what make a man
'unclean' but eating with unwashed hands does
not make him 'unclean'" Matthew 151-20

6
  • Random Principle 1- Any time traditions,
opinions of men or church methods are elevated to
the level of the authority of scripture, Gods
    Spirit is grieved

7
  • Random Principle 2- As followers of Christ, we
are a direct reflection upon our Teacher. How we
act and respond and treat people and live tells
the world around us what Jesus is like
  • Message Version- Jesus put it right back on
them. Why do you use your rules to play fast and
    loose with God's commands?

8
  • Random Principle 3- Worship that engages the
heart is true worship, worship that God accepts
  • Random Principle 4- Living based on the
authority of Gods Word alone honors God and is
    beautiful in his sight

9
  • Random Principle 5- Truth offends. Each person
has to decide for himself or herself, What am I
more committed to? The truth of Gods Word? Or
    the approval of people?

10
  • Rules and traditions never make anyone closer to
    God
  • Since you died with Christ to the basic
principles of this world, why, as though you
still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules
"Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"?

11
  • These are all destined to perish with use,
because they are based on human commands and
teachings. Such regulations indeed have an
appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed
worship, their false humility and their harsh
treatment of the body, but they lack any value in
    restraining sensual indulgence -
    Colossians 220-23

12
  • Rules-oriented living leads to sin. Because its
based on my performance, not my relationship.
And its external rather than internal

13
  • Observation- The biggest hypocrites are the ones
who spend the most time putting up a religious
    front
  • Actions dont make people unholy. They only
    demonstrate whats already there

14
  • Observation- Religious people are interested in
external rules. Jesus is interested in a
relationship that continually produces a changed
    heart

15
  • Key Words External Rules
  • Real Words Internal Heart-Change
