A Little History
  • In 1650 the Meroke Indians lived in what was
    known as Raynor Town.
  • On Monday, August 22, 1853 in the home of
    Benjamin Smith it became Freeport.

  • 1783-- frame house was built.
  • 1858-- Post Office
  • 1892-- Freeport Bank
  • 1893-- Water Works
  • 1898-- artificial water way to the South Bay
  • 1898-- Freeport Electric
  • 1928-- flag

Mills in Freeport
  • One was built in 1837 by Joseph Smart where wood
    pulp paper was manufactured. The first edition
    of Thompsons Long Island and Websters Speller
    were printed here.
  • Another mill was owned by Ed Raynor who sold it
    in 1870 to Isaac Horsfall for 6,000. Then in
    1888 he sold it to Brooklyn City Water Works for
    40,000. It was abandoned two or three years
    later.
