Title: A Brief Introduction to Learning Styles
1A Brief Introduction to Learning Styles
- Learning style is simply the way that you learn
new information most efficiently.
- Think about how you remember a phone number. Do
you
- have to use a phone to punch in the numbers to
see where your fingers go?
- close your eyes and see the number when you wrote
it down?
- look at the phone to see the numbers on the phone?
- say the number aloud or hear the persons voice
who told you the number?
123-4567
2VARK Learning Styles
- Four Main Learning Styles
- Visual
- Aural
- Read/Write
- Kinesthetic

4Visual Learners
- Visual learners learn by seeing graphical
representations
start
get hours worked and hourly wage
Think of passing a parameter like passing a baton
in a relay race
The parameter is like the baton.
pay hours wage
display pay
stop
5Aural Learners
- they learn by listening or talking
- may need to read directions aloud
- instructor may need to tell them what they are
expected to do during a group exercise or lab - may perform better in group exercises or with
partners
6Read/Write Learners
- they learn by written word either by reading it
or writing it - they might have several books open at once
- provide lecture notes that are incomplete have
them write examples - provide written handouts for all assignments and
activities - include written directions along with graphical
directions
Click on View. Click on Locals Window.
Step 5. Choose View ?Locals Window. This window
will display the values of all of the local
variables. You may have to drag the locals
window to make it larger (move your cursor until
it is a double-arrow and then click and drag
ask your neighbor if you need help).
This is the Locals window it will display the
values of all of your local variables. VERY
useful!!
7Kinesthetic Learners
- learn by doing
- create hands-on labs and group exercises
- material must seem real or relevant
- use practical examples and realistic assignments
8Multimodal Learners
- have preferences for more than one learning style
- may be able to adapt their learning to the most
convenient style (such as what matches with their
instructor) - may mean that they need all of their preferences
to learn
9Learning Styles Applied Learner-Centered Learning
- Learner-centered learning is regarded as a
highly effective form of learning. - Shifts the focus in the classroom from the
teacher to the learner, highlighting what the
student is learning and how the student is
learning (Weimer, 2002).
10Learning Styles Applied Learner-Centered Learning
- In this type of instruction, the teacher provides
learning opportunities and then assumes the role
of a guide. - Evidence exists to suggest that learner-centered
classrooms lead to more effective learning than
teacher-centered classrooms (Weimer, 2002).
11Learning Styles Applied Learner-Centered Learning
- In Introduction to Psychology (PSY111) Online,
students choose learning opportunities that best
align with their individual learning styles. - Learning opportunities include visual, auditory,
read/write, and kinesthetic. - http//www.users.muohio.edu/uhlerbd/psy111modthree

12Learning Style Website
- www.vark-learn.com
- will determine a value for each learning style
- Be sure to explain to your students why you
present the material in so many different ways - for example, here are our learning styles
13Its Your Turn
- Using Internet Explorer,visit www.vark-learn.com
- Click on Questionnaire
- Check all answers thatapply to you
- Tell us your scores
14Personality Profiles
- based on Myers-Briggs personality types
- uses a combination of four letters to define a
personality type

17Personality Profiles

18Why Use Personality Profiles?
- to provide insight into how people approach
learning - about themselves
- about people who will be using the project that
they will design - framework for students (and faculty and
administrators and ) to view other perspectives
19Personality Profile Websites
- www.humanmetrics.com
- this questionnaire will take about 10-15 minutes
to complete - it will give you the four letters of your type
and the percentages - for example, my type is E-78 N-67 T-78 J-87
- www.hobbitlore.com
- this site will take about 5-10 minutes to
complete - it will match your personality type to characters
from Lord of The Rings - for example, I am most like the Dwarves
