Intervertebral disc degeneration

Intervertebral Discs The intervertebral discs
are the joints of the spinal column. They have a
primarily mechanical role in transmitting loads
through the spine and providing flexibility to
the spinal column (allowing bending, flexion and
torsion). The disc has a complex structure.

Cervical Disc Herniation
  • The most common symptom of a cervical disc
herniation is neck pain that radiates (spreads)
down to the arm in various locations. The
specific location of the arm pain depends on
which disc is involved. Most of the symptoms of a
disc herniation are related to pressure on a
specific nerve root. Rarely, large disc
herniations can cause pressure on the spinal
cord. Pressure on the spinal cord can result in a
problem called cervical myelopathy. It can cause
among other things spasticity which can present
    as problems walking.

Intervetebral disc degeneration
Loss of water content causes the discs to lose
some of their ability to act as cushions. This
can lead to even more stress on the annulus and
still more tears as the cycle repeats itself. As
the nucleus loses its water content, it
collapses. Without the cushion effect of the
discs, the vertebrae in your spine would not be
able to absorb stresses or provide the movement
needed to bend and twist.

TREATMENT
  • The overall goal of treatment is to
  • make you comfortable as quickly as possible
  • design a spine-care program to reduce further
    degeneration
  • get you back to normal activity in a timely
