Title: Worship God Like a Priest

1
Worship God Like a Priest
  • True worship in the N.T. understood by true
worship under the O.T. Hebrews 81-6

2
INTRODUCTION
  • The Old Testament is filled with detailed
instructions for the priests and Levites to
properly serve Jehovah according to the pattern
    He set forth for them.
  • They were instructed to worship God in a
    sanctified manner. Lev. 1612
  • God has made His displeasure clear when they did
not worship God by faith. Lev. 101-3

3
INTRODUCTION
  • O.T. worship among other things were a shadow
of the heavenly things that are revealed under
    the N.T. Heb. 84-5
  • Hebrews 8-10 demonstrates the superiority of
Christ over the O.T., much can be learned from
    through the O.T. priesthood.
  • Under a more excellent ministry/ covenant we,
like the priests of old, must worship God by
    faith. cp. Heb. 116

4
INTRODUCTION
  • In this lesson we shall see
  • What the priests of old did by faith to worship
    God acceptably.
  • What we as priests of the New Testament do by
    faith to worship God acceptably.

5
The Shadow Priestly Duties Under the Old
Testament
  • A sacred place of worship tent of meeting.
  • This is where God would meet man. Ex. 2910
    2721
  • Gods presence literally seen pillar of
    fire/cloud.
  • In other words, this was the house of Jehovah
    (the Lord). Psa. 1221

6
The Shadow Priestly Duties Under the Old
Testament
  • Clothed in holy garments
  • High priest robe ephod etc.. Ex. 28 (v. 36)
    (ordinary priests) 1 Sam. 2218
  • Linen trousers. Ex. 2842-43

7
The Shadow Priestly Duties Under the Old
Testament
  • A sacred service
  • Washing first. Ex. 3018-21
  • The priests offering. Lev. 1711
  • Entering in the Holy place lamp stand
    showbread. Ex. 2635 (Ex. 2720-21 Lev. 249)

8
The Shadow Priestly Duties Under the Old
Testament
  • Accessing Gods throne in the Most Holy Place.
    Lev. 16
  • Once a year (Day of Atonement) the high priest
    had access into Gods presence.
  • This is where the blood of the bull and goat
would be offered as atonement for him, his
family, and the nation of Israel.

9
True worship Our Duties Under the New Testament
  • When we come to worship as a body we likewise
    enter the house of God.
  • It is clear that the Lords body is in fact the
    house of God. Heb. 1021
  • Yet, it must also be understood that the location
where we meet is set aside (is sacred) for the
purpose of worshipping the Lord. cp. 1 Cor.
    1120-22

10
True worship Our Duties Under the New Testament
  • When we come to worship we must always put on
    holy garments.
  • As Christians we must put on the garments of
righteousness as reflected in Christ. Gal. 327
  • Those who serve acceptably have white linen
    garments. Cp. Rev. 714-17

11
True worship Our Duties Under the New Testament
  • When we come to worship the Lord we must come
    clean cp. Jn. 35
  • As Christians we must offer ourselves pure before
    the Lord. Rom. 121
  • As priests of the New Covenant we share in the
bread of our Lord. 1 Cor. 1017
  • In other words, our service to God must be in
harmony with our fellowship with Him. 1 Cor.
    1018-21

12
True worship Our Duties Under the New Testament
  • When we come to worship we have access to Gods
    presence.
  • To come into Gods presence is not a light
    matter. Cp. Lev. 101-3
  • The result is that we must come into His presence
as a faithful high priest would.

13
CONCLUSION
  • Simply imagine what a priest went through as he
entered the courtyard, holy place of the
tabernacle, and ultimately (for the high priest)
    the most holy place.
  • As priests in the royal priesthood of the New
Covenant (1 Pet. 29) we must come to worship God
with this same reverence God expected under the
    Old Covenant
