Title: Choosing Land for Homestead Living

1
Choosing Land for Homestead Living
While the term homestead might refer to
anything from small urban dwellings to distant
acreages in forests, prairies, or deserts, one
thing all homesteaders appear to have in common
is a desire for an independent, self-sufficient
life. The amount of land needed to homestead
varies depending on the vision of the homesteader
and the type of terrain sought
2
Remoteness
How remote do you and your family want to be? The
stereotype of the homesteader living kilometers
from the last civilized outpost is out of date.
Today, many people are creating self-sufficient
(relatively speaking) homesteads in cities,
towns, and rural areas. While small plots in
residential settings are more constrained by size
and zoning limitations, having Neighbours nearby
can encourage bartering and sharing of tools and
resources.
3
Are you Thinking about Starting a Family?
You can provide for their education by
homeschooling them, but as they develop, they
will need friends nearby. Medical care, Distance
from Hospital determine what emergency medical
services are available and how long it takes for
them to arrive. An ambulance can take an hour to
reach our location, for example, depending on the
weather.
4
Broadband and Phone line Access
Determine whether the land, you can serve via
phone or ground line and whether internet access
is available. However, the internet has evolved
into a valuable resource for gardening
information, homesteading forums, and money
opportunities. Moreover, the opportunity to earn
a living over the internet allows more
individuals to farm in rural and distant places.
5
Land Characteristics
A general awareness of the regions prevalent
weather patterns will assist you in evaluating
the land for practical features such as natural
wind barriers and drainage systems. Learn about
the local wildlife species as well to get a sense
of what you are up against while gardening or
raising poultry or cattle.
