3It has previously been thought that this portrait
may represent one of the elder sons of Duke
Cosimo de' Medici, Bronzino's principal patron.
Scholars have also suggested he may be the
sculptor Pierino da Vinci or the painter
Francesco Salviati. However, each of these
theories is in some way problematic

35Bronzino, aka Agnolo di Cosimo di Maiano was
a Florentine Mannerist painter. His
sobriquet, Bronzino, in all probability refers to
his relatively dark skin. He lived all his life
in Florence, and from his late 30s was kept busy
as the court painter of Cosimo I de' Medici,
Grand Duke of Tuscany. He was mainly a
portraitist but also painted many religious
subjects, and a few allegorical subjects, which
include what is probably his best known
work, Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time, c. 1544-45,
now in London.

37In 2010 an unique exhibition in Firenze devoted
to the work of one of the greatest painters of
the 16th century, Agnolo di Cosimo known as
Bronzino (1503-1572), a sophisticated court
painter in the years in which Cosimo I de Medici
was in power and one of the greatest artists in
the history of Italian painting. The exhibition,
with loans from some of the leading museums of
the world, offered visitors the chance to admire
over 70 paintings by the artist himself (the 80
of his total production)
