Traditional Music
  • When talking about African music, the word
"traditional music" refers to the qualities of
African music previous to European colonisation
of the continent, which was most prevalent in the
late nineteenth century. This pre-colonial era
was characterised by social upheaval and
dynamism. Great African empires and kingdoms
emerged and fell, leaving many of their customs
and cultures in place in African villages today.

  • Traditional African musical styles, despite their
    diversity, contain some basic characteristics.
The focus is frequently placed on rhythms rather
than melody and harmony. The organisational
element used is repetition, on which
improvisation is based. Polyphony, polyrhythm, a
conversational style of music, and interlocking
are widely used in African music, which is
generally performed by groups of musicians.
