Not only does it enjoy official status in
Ethiopia, but it is also the lingua franca in
several major cities and towns of the country. It
is used as means of communication in
administration by federal and several state
governments.

The native speakers of the tongue are
approximately 24 million in numbers. Almost four
million people speak it as their second language.
All the Amharas use it as their only tongue, but
other groups in Ethiopia also use it frequently.
