Environment Laminar Flow Hood Cabinets

Why to select laminar flow cabinets?
  • In creating a particle-free working environment
Laminar Flow Hood cabinets help a lot and it does
it by projecting air through a filtration system.
  • In simple words, there are numerous particles
floating in the ambient air. They consist of
microbes such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and
many more. For any plant tissue culture
laboratory they are a must-have as working
sterile is the key to a successful culture.

Working of a laminar flow hood
  • Working principle is basically based on the
laminar flow of air through the cabinet. This
simply indicates that air is moving at the same
    speed in the same direction.
  • This device basically works by letting inward
flow of air but at first it should pass through a
    pre-filter.
  • Next, towards the HEPA filters the blower or fan
    directs the air.
  • The filters then trap the bacteria, fungi and
other particulate materials so that the air
moving out of it remains particulate-free air.
  • Then across the work surface the air passing
through the filter is exhausted as a part of the
    laminar flow of the air.
  • As the laminar flow hood cabinet is closed on the
sides external air with contamination cannot
    enter.

Types of laminar flow cabinets
  • Vertical laminar flow cabinets
  • These cabinets even recalculate and filter the
air from inside apart from filtering the air from
outside the hood. However, over the workspace
from the top clean air comes out in a downward
    direction.
  • Horizontal laminar flow cabinets
  • From outside the hood these cabinets filter the
air and it blows the clean air from the back of
the hood towards the operator. It creates
horizontal airflow of particulate-free air. This
type of cabinet is highly suitable as it gives
    the most control over contamination.

Things to avoid while using a laminar flow
  • From the cabinet workbench any waste or other
non-sterile items should be away. In the airflow
these things create turbulence and can create
    contaminations.
  • Around your hands and wrists you should not wear
    any jewelry/watches.
  • Never place large objects near the back of the
cabinet as they can result in disruption of the
    laminar airflow and create contaminations.
  • The most important point to keep in mind is that
inside the Laminar Flow Hood cabinet never uses
    non-sterile culture vessels.
