ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Nalanda Open University (NOU) is an open
university that gives it all sorts of flexibility
and freedom in operation. The university though
physically present at one place has students and
active learners all throughout India. NOU is
presently recognized by MHRD, UGC, DEC (Distance
Education Council). The University is presently
the second biggest open University in India.
Deriving its name from the Nalanda University of
Ancient India the university has big boots to
fill and is likewise moving towards its goals.
Therefore scores of programs are available for
students of diversified backgrounds.

ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The main purpose of the University is in the
objectives which the University happens to be
achieving quite nicely. The Objectives of the
institute mainly are to provide education and
higher learning opportunities to those candidates
who no longer have the option to pursue formal

HISTORY
One might say the history of Nalanda Open
University goes only till 1987 when it was
established by an Ordinance issued by the
Government Of Bihar. However, that will not be
all actually the history of the university is ass
rooted to Nalanda as the history of Nalanda.
Nalanda is the birthplace of the oldest resident
University in the world. The university operated
in 2000 teachers and 10000 students in 5th
century A.D. and overall Nalanda has seen many
kings come and go. Many of these kings greatly
contributed to the development of the university.
However, presently only the ruins remain, but
that is not all the Nalanda Open University is
already coming up adjacent to the heritage of the
ruins. With the passing of the Act Of Nalanda
Open Unversity, the institute became more
flexible in exercising its jurisdiction. The
institute has since its inception admitted scores
of students and kept securing admission as easy
as it is. Furthermore, as of 2018, the University
has generated over 1.25 lac students.

CAMPUSES
Presently the institute functions from its
temporary campus ( camp office ) at Bisomuan
Bhawan. Biscomuan Bhawan is the tallest building
in Bihar and features a revolving Restaurant.
Presently the University occupies the 2nd, 3rd,
4th, and 12th floors of the building and on these
floors, it finds itself a temporary home totaling
60000 sqft. Presently facilities like the library
examination center and administrative services
are at the camp office. Furthermore reaching the
camp office is easy one can reach Patna by air,
train, or road. Once in Patna, one needs to take
a taxi to reach directly. Moreover, the Patna
Junction is just 2.7 km away from the camp
office, therefore, reaching it wont be much of a
trouble. As of now another campus, in other
words, the permanent campus is undergoing
construction. The university is to receive 40
acres of land adjacent to Nalanda University
Remains however till now only 10 acre is
available remaining 30 acres is soon is to be
soon delivered. The initial phase of construction
would have been complete by 2020 but presently
work is on halt due to Covid-19.

COURSES OFFERED
Nalanda Open University has minimum criteria for
admission into courses. The institute offers many
courses through a number of schools the few of
the schools and courses available are
below. School of Computer Education and
InformationTechnlogy MCA, BCA, CIT, etc. School
of Economics, Commerce, and Management Master Of
Commerce, M.A. in Economics, BBA, B.A.,
Certificate course in disaster management. The
School Of Health and Environmental Science P.G
Diploma in Yogic studies, M.A/M.Sc. in
Environmental Studies, and various certificate
courses. School Of Indian and Foreign Language
M.A. in Bhojpuri, HindiSanskrit, Urdu, School Of
Journalism and Mass Communication Master in
Journalism and Mass Communication, Bachelor Of
Journalism and Mass Communication.

INFRASTRUCTURE
Generally, a University where students can enjoy
full-time studies requires ample infrastructure
from functioning to operating smoothly everything
depends on one way or the other on the
Universitys infrastructure. However, Since
Nalanda Open University virtually does not have
the need to entertain students at its premises it
really becomes unnecessary to have infra like
sports complexes hostel, and canteens. The
university Presently has some infra that it
requires to function, there the infra is as
below. Library The institute may not have
students on its premises but does have schools
that require to make syllabus and exam papers.
The library houses as many a 55000 print books
which vary and contain many subjects. The library
moreover, houses books in fields of studies like
Archaeology, History, and Gandhian thought.

Computer Centre The computer center at the camp
office has 300 IBM basic functioning computers
which are only fit to perform basic tasks like
giving exams. Website The website of the
university is very basic and easy to navigate.

the virtual noticeboard on the home page
regularly updates with vital info for
students. Practical Classes The university gives
weightage to practical marks. Therefore it
organizes practical classes in its study centers
at a place suitable. Thus, students get the
classes for practicals.
