Title: Five Common Fire Door Faults
1 FIVE COMMON FIRE DOOR FAULTS
2 INTRODUCTION Fire doors are one of the most
crucial components of the passive fire protection
system. As per the laws, both the residential and
commercial complexes should place fire door
Ireland to ensure that the occupants get time to
get out of the building within time. However,
installing the fire door is not the end, as you
need to monitor the fire doors to identify if
there is any fault. The following slides pointed
to a few faults of fire doors.
3SMOKE OR FIRE SEAL IS MISSING While checking the
doors, check that the intumescent seals are
fitted or not. The seals expand from the heat.
Hence, in case of a fire, the seals can
effectively block the gaps around the doors to
prevent the fire from spreading from one place to
another. A striking fact is that in 61 of fire
door Ireland, these seals remain missing.
4INCORRECT OR UNCLEAR SIGNAGE How will you
identify between a fire door and a normal door?
It is the signage that makes the difference.
Further, the labelling on the door proves that it
is checked by a third-party professional. While
carrying out the inspection, do a detailed check
to find that the signage is marked clear or not.
If not, then get the signage now.
5DAMAGED DOOR LEAVES While carrying out the
inspection, dont forget to check the damage to
the doors. Remember that small damage on the door
is enough to compromise the comprehensive safety
of the fire doors. As a fire protection
contractor mentioned, that 15 of the fire doors
come with damage.
6UNSUITABLE OR POORLY FITTED HINGES A fire is a
complete unit comprised of different sections.
Hinges are one of them. Often people overlook the
fitting of the hinges, but in the case of a fire
door, you cant take such risks. All the
residential and commercial fire doors must have
three hinges, at least. You must check the number
of hinges while inspecting a fire door Ireland.
7 EXCESSIVE GAPS AROUND THE DOORS NFPA regulations
say that the gaps of the door panel from the
frame should not exceed 3mm apart from the lower
side. Hence, while checking, you must check these
gaps too by placing a 1 coin. The thickness of
the coin is around 3mm, so you can place it in
the gap. If the gap is more, then you must go for
repair. In 34 of the cases, the gap is more than
recommended.
