Top Myths About Engine Oil
2
When it comes to your cars maintenance and
preservation, motor oil is perhaps the utmost
responsibility. Oil is what allows the various
parts of your engine to seamlessly and smoothly
interact with as little friction as possible,
leading to reduced wear, lower temperatures, and
a nearly eradicated chance of seizing.
However, when it comes to oil, theres a number
of different myths and misconceptions that have
either invaded general knowledge, or used to be
true but no longer are. However they may have
gotten there, its time to set the record
straight. Here are eight of the most popular
motor oil myths, and the truth about each of them
3
Dark Oil Always Needs to Be Changed
False. Dark color is not a strong indication that
your oil is dirty or no longer doing its job. In
fact, some oils go dark quickly as the additives
designed to clean your engine start working.
However, gritty or grainy oil is dirty and needs
to be changed ASAP.
4
You Have to Get Your Oil Changed Every 3,000 Miles
While the 3,000 miles is a good rule of thumb,
this is not always true. Some cars using
good-quality oil can go as much as 8,000 to
10,000 miles or more between oil changes. The
best way to find out how often you should change
yours refer to your owners manual.
5
Synthetic Oils Equal Higher Mileage
Not necessarily true. There are other reasons
synthetic oils seem to last longer than their
petroleum-based counterparts. For instance, they
work at very high temperatures, provide better
protection against wear, give greater stability
to the engine, and encourage the formation of
fewer deposits.
6
Taking Too Long Before an Oil Change Voids Your
Warranty
In this day and age when synthetic oil with
extended life is in use, thats probably untrue.
Even if your vehicle manual expressly instructs
you to use petroleum-based oils, your warranty
will not be voided unless theres a demonstration
that the oil was the immediate cause of the
problem.
7
More Oil Is Always Better
The worst mistake you can make is to overfill
your engine oil just because it leaks. When in
excess, engine oil causes expanded obstruction
which leads to excessive heat. The extra oil
could also end up in the cylinders leading to
excessive burning, which in turn leads to
increased deposits in the combustion chamber. The
proper remedy is to fix the oil leak problem or
top up the engine oil daily.
