arent repairable - Particle board underneath may absorb moisture
- Develops a worn look - edges chip, damaged by
scrubbing, can de-laminate
23The experience Other Solid Surface countertops
- Some, but not all the features of Corian
- Consumer not able to truly express themselves due

24The experience Laminated Veneer countertops
- In appearance, looks like solid surface
- Possibility of cracking due to the laminated

color pallet and design flexibility - Particle board underneath may absorb moisture and
cause delamination - Performance issues due to its low impact strength
25The experience Ceramic Tile countertops
- Gives kitchen a different design look
- Grout lines can trap dirt and promote the growth
of mold, mildew, and bacteria - Surface bumpy and not smooth to the touch

replaced - Unforgiving to your delicate china and glassware
- Warranty???
26The experience Wood countertops
- Nicks, cuts and scratches easily
- Requires a sealant or protective coating that
must be maintained - Porous nature allows for the growth of mildew,
mold and bacteria - Not easily repaired when damaged
- Low resistance to heat
- Without protective coating can absorb moisture
and or stains - Warranty???

- Granite CRACKS!
- We live in a 2.5 yr old home that has granite
countertops. A couple of days ago, my wife
noticed a hairline crack about 4 inches long,
starting from the front edge of the countertop.
The crack is about 6 inches away from our under
mount sink and about 8 inches away from the L
corner. Any ideas as to why this might have
happened? There is no evidence of the house
shifting or settling? - RESPONSE Hairline cracks can occur for any
number of reasons. Poor installation of the
counter top, natural flaws in the granite,
excessive heat, etc.

- Granite STAINS!
- RUST - Help! My brand new granite island top
has a rust ring from a plant. How should I
remove? - RESPONSE First try removing the ring with a
little Iron Out. Iron Out can be purchased in
most hardware stores and grocery stores. Place a
small amount on the rust, add some water and
agitate for several minutes. If this does not
remove the rust, then you will need to use
poultice.

- Granite STAINS!
- Butter/Grease We installed a granite counter
top for a client. Our client wipes up butter and
other greases with a sponge but a stain appears
anyway. Our fabbers used muriatic acid to clean
the stains which they said would disappear after
a few days. The stains have not gone away or
even faded after five days. What can be done to
help our client have a countertop that will have
an enduring finish that looks like the day it was
installed? I dont think its right to tell our
client that each time you butter your toast, you
have to use acid cleanser! - RESPONSE You will need to pull the stains out
with a poultice made with a good degreaser. For
instructions, see the stone tips at
www.ntc-stone.com. -

- Olive Oil A house guest left a glass with
olive oil in it on our new granite kitchen
counter top overnight. There is now a stain. I
have tried the bleach soaked paper towels for 24
hours! made the poultice of bleach and flour and
sealed it under plastic for 24 hours! and have
been told to make a poultice of acetone and
plaster, seal it under plastic and leave for 24
hours! Any suggestions? - RESPONSE You are using the wrong chemical in
your poultice. Try using some liquid dishwashing
detergent in your poultice. The will act as a
degreaser and should remove the oil in a couple
of applications. -

- Granite STAINS!
- SOAP STAINS Liquid detergent dripped from the
soap dispenser onto the granite counter top and
now there is a dark stain. The stain is very
noticeable. How do I get it out? - RESPONSE You will need to poultice the stain
with a good degreaser. For info on poulticing,
visit the stone tips at www.ntc.com.

- Granite CRACKS!
- I had a black galaxy counter top installed only
5 days ago. While cleaning up, I notice a fine
crack from the edge of the bull nose in about 12
inches. What could have caused this and is it
fixable? - RESPONSE The crack may have already been
there. If it is a hairline crack, it most likely
occurred during the extraction process. These
cracks are caused by the explosives used to
remove the granite from the ground. The crack
could also be caused by movement of the
countertop. Call the fabricator to take a look
at it. It is possible to fill the crack with a
special glue.
41FACT OR FICTION?
- WHAT IS POULTICING?
- Marble, granite and certain ceramic tile are
porous materials. If not thoroughly sealed, they
WILL stain! - The only way a stain can be removed is to
literally pull it out of the stone or ceramic
with both a chemical and material that will
absorb the stain. This chemical
absorbent-material combination is what is called
POULTICE. - Poultices are commonly powder or cloth material
that can be mixed with a chemical and placed on
top of a stain. Clays and diatomoceous earth are
safe and readily available, but do not use
whiting or clays containing iron with an acidic
chemical iron will react with the acid and may
cause rust staining. - It is best to purchase powders that are designed
specifically for stone and tile. Consult a stone
restoration specialist or your stone supplier if
in doubt. Before you attempt to remove a stain,
it is EXTREMELY important that you know what
caused the stain! - (Information from Fred Hueston, President of
NTC)
42FACT OR FICTION?
- Dispel the Myths!
- Granite is easy to maintain???
- Re-enforce the Facts!
- Granite is not so easy to maintain!
- Granite must be sealed. How often, however,
remains a mystery -- some say, Every 6 months
others say, Once every 12 months others say
Every 2 years, and still others say Its not
necessary!
