Title: Bihu
1Bihu is the National Festival of Assam. It is
celebrated three times in a year Rongali
Bihu, Kati Bihu and Bhogali Bihu.
2 Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu. The Word
Rongali comes from the Rang means Happiness and
Celebration. After the first rain of Spring
season. This Bihu is celebrated in the middle of
April. This Bihu brings Happiness among Assamese
people and united everyone to promote and
celebrate Bihu. people of Assam celebrates this
Bihu wearing traditional dresses and performing
Folk music and Dance.
3 Kati Bihu is also called Kongali Bihu. This
Bihu is celebrated in the middle of October. In
the first day of Kati month of Assamese calendar.
Kati Bihu is related to agriculture. This Bihu is
celebrated in the evening time People lightning
lamps or "Saaki" in various places, especially on
the farm. The cultivators pray for the good
health of crops.In this Bihu people of Assam
worship, and pray and welcome Goddes Laxmi Devi.
People also light Sakki in front of Tulsi plant
(Tulsi plays a major role and very especial in
Hinduism) and Bhoral Ghar (Storeroom for food).
This formal procedure continues for the whole
Kati month.
4Magh Bihu is also called Bhogali Bihu, the word
'Bhogali' has come from the word "Bhog" means
eating and enjoyment. This Bihu is celebrated in
the middle of January month and the first day of
Magh month of Assamese calendar. Before the Magh
Bihu one night ago people of Assam celebrate
Uruka night, Uruka is last night of Makar
Sankranti.In this Bihu, women prepare
Pithas(Assamese cuisine) and the various type of
food and distribute to each other and visit their
friends and relatives home, carrying the various
type of sweets and snacks to give greetings and
wishing Bihu.
