Blastocyst
The human embryo after fertilisation goes through
various stages. Around day 3 the embryo reaches
cleavage stage and in normal IVF, gets
transferred to the uterus of the woman by a
catheter. On day 5/6 the embryo reaches the
blastocyst stage where the cells are more in
number. In blastocyst stage the embryologist can
assess the quality of the embryos and choose the
best blastocyst for transfer. It is an advance
culture of embryos in the laboratory.
Why blastocyst transfer is required?
Blastocyst transfer is required for couples who
have previous failed IVF cycles. In day 2/day 3
embryo transfer, the embryos are in early stage
of development and implant might not result in
successful pregnancy. Therefore, the embryos are
cultured in the lab for two to three days more to
reach the blastocyst stage and then implanted
into the uterus of the woman for conception.
