3Egg freezing, also known as mature oocyte
cryopreservation, is a method used to preserve
reproductive potential in women. Eggs are
harvested from women ovaries, frozen unfertilized
and stored for later use. A frozen egg can be
thawed, combined with sperm in a lab and
implanted in uterus.

5Women with diminished ovarian reserve commonly
have a reduced quantity of ovarian follicles and
it can be harder to get pregnant naturally after
35, which is why many women who, for whatever
reason, aren't quite ready to have a baby before
then are opting to freeze their eggs to help
ensure reproductive success later in life.
Another reason to freeze may be if you've
started trying to conceive in your late 30s, or
think delayed childbearing might be a
possibility, and you want to have more than one
child. You may be able to get pregnant with the
first one naturally, but then there's two and
three, at which point you could be well into your
40s.

7The Cost of Egg Freezing
- Costs can be divided into 3 broad phases
- Consultation, medication, egg retrieval
- Storage of eggs until use (usually an annual
fee) - Transfer of the eggs to attempt pregnancy
8Key Points
- A woman who is not ready to have a child can
choose to freeze eggs to try to preserve her
ability to have a child later. - Freezing eggs is not a guarantee of being able
to have a child later. - Not everyone is a candidate for egg freezing.
- Egg freezing typically works best for those in
their 20s to early 30s and is not usually
recommended for women over 38 years.
