  • Dementia is the term used to describe a
group of conditions which cause a gradual
progressive decline in the day-to-day functioning
of an individual. The condition attacks the
central nervous system i.e. the brain. Symptoms
include but are not limited to loss of memory,
intellect, rational though, social skills and
physical ability. When it comes to Australian
Dementia care, Sydney is struggling to keep up
    with current demand.

  • On the hole, Australia has a great network
for providing care to those individuals living
with dementia. The condition affects around
350,000 Australians, with around 1.2 million
people involved in the care of people living with
dementia. This system of care costs around 4.9
billion to maintain year on year, with an
estimated 175,000 people receiving aged or home
    care.

  • Professor Yun-Hee Jeon from Sydney Nursing School
says that the needs of people in home care
situations are often highly complex. She says
that most of them have a number of medical
health conditions, as well as physical and
functional declines to be addressed. This pushes
the cost of care for those living with dementia,
as an interdisciplinary approach is required to
    keep them healthy.

  • According to Access Economics Alzheimers
Australia report, around 65 of people living
with dementia in NSW reside in the metropolitan
area of Sydney. This is a huge proportion of
people, so understandably we might expect the
Sydney area to cater for the needs of such
    individuals.

  • Martina Kane of the Alzheimers Society (UK) says
that "It is essential that people have access to
the right support and services to help them live
well with dementia and that research into better
care, treatments and eventually a cure remain
    high on the agenda."
  • Therefore, it is important for Sydney to up the
availability of home care in the region, so that
more people living with dementia can access the
care needed. Linda True man lost her parents to
dementia, and says that she was really impressed
with the level of care she her mother
received. Making it ever more evident that we
need to ensure home care for dementia is readily
    available.

  • A lack of supply of Dementia care in Sydney has
led to concerns that people will not receive
adequate care for their dementia. With doctors
becoming more competent at diagnosing dementia
earlier and rising case numbers across Australia
it is the right time for cities like Sydney to
focus funding into providing more home care
facilities for individuals living with the
    dementia.
