In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)
In-Home Supportive Services provides crucial
benefits for families of children with
developmental disabilities. Unfortunately,
applying for and receiving these benefits is
notoriously difficult and many families give up
after encountering roadblock after roadblock. At

IHSS and Protective Supervision Benefits
IHSS is a California government program that
provides financial support for in-home caretakers
of impaired elders, persons with disabilities,
and children with developmental disabilities
including ASD. While a variety of benefits are
available, the most important for families of
children with special needs is Protective
Supervision. When you are approved for
Protective Supervision, you will receive an
hourly wage to stay home and care for your child.
This wage is exempt from Federal income tax.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

(SSD) and Californias Supplemental Security
Income (SSI) can make a world of difference. But

SSI and Disabled Children
Although SSI is mainly aimed at adults who cannot
work, SSI benefits can also be paid to families
with disabled children. This can be a lifesaver
for families struggling to make ends meet while
caring for a child with special needs. SSI can
help your family at two levels. With a young
disabled child in the house, the SSI payment can
help manage care in and out of home. If your
disabled child is nearly and adult, they could
qualify for SSI in their own right so that they
have ongoing income after age 18.

Conservatorships and Special Needs Trusts
When you are responsible for a loved one with a
disability, a plan is needed in order for the
financial security and services that the disabled
individual requires in order to live a fulfilling
life, as independently as possible. Its
necessary to assess the costs for the essential
support, identify the government benefits for
which the person is eligible and may be
receiving, and plan for the future when your
child is an adult, including filing for a
conservatorship if the individual will be unable
to make important decisions independently, and a
special needs trust when caregivers have passed
away.
