    high-temperature lead-free solders

  • The aim of this project
  • to study the systems on the Zn-Sn base, from
    the point of view of the thermodynamic
    properties and phase equilibrium diagram
    assessments (WG 1).
  • These results will serve as a background for
    evaluation of other physical and mechanical
    properties of prospective high-temperature
    solders.
  • The study will cover materials convenient for
    soldering in the temperature range 230-350 C.
  • Most activities will deal with the metal systems
    not included in the previous COST 531 database.
  • The basic system can be characterised as Sn-Zn-X
    (X Al, Mg, Ni, Pd, Sb). The concrete selection
    of alloying elements will be done on the basis of
    cooperation with other research groups involved
    in the COST MP0602 Action.
  • The systems will be studied experimentally and
    theoretically, main aim being to assess reliable
    and correct phase diagram of above mentioned
    systems.

  • Resources available in laboratory of proposer
  • Experimental part
  • TEM/STEM Philips CM 12 equipped with EDAX
    Phoenix).
  • SEM JEOL JSM-6460 with the energy and wave
    dispersive microanalysers of X-rays - EDX, WDX,
    and electron backscattered diffraction EBSD
    INCA Energy, Wave and Crystal).
  • DSC/DTA apparatus Netzsch DSC 404C, equipped with
    high temperature furnace, allowing to study phase
    transformations up to 1600 C.
  • The X-ray diffractometer Philips Xpert will be
    also used for the identification of phases,
    coexisting in samples.
  •  Theoretical part
  • COST 531 database
  • The MTDATA and THERMOCALC software for
    assessment of phase diagrams
  • The software for the ab-initio calculations is
    also available in collaborative laboratory.
  • A. Kroupa , Adela Zemanova - thermodynamics of
    metals and phase diagrams modelling. They have
    broad experience in the theoretical modelling of
    secondary phases in multi-component thermodynamic
    equilibria.
  • M. Svoboda and J. Burík are specialised in the
    field of  analytical electron microscopy (AEM).
    They investigated systematically modern
    multicomponent and multiphase materials,
    including promising materials for classical
    lead-free soldering, especially from the point of
    view of identification of intermetallic phases
    and their influence on material properties.

Watson, H. Ipser, L. Zabdyr .. Skills or
expertise sought from other partners   The
research group welcome a cooperation with any
research team, which can supply data for the
assessment of phase diagrams, especially the
thermodynamic data, which are crucial for the
correct assessment. The teams measuring further
physical and materials properties are also very
important as they can complete the database of
knowledge of above mentioned systems.
