1Calgary Celiac Conference Gluten Free Cosmetics
- Selina Careen RN, OHND
- Juanita House RN, OHNC, COHNc
- October 25th, 2008
2Objectives
- Share Information to help you make informed
decisions regarding cosmetic use gluten
containing or gluten free - Know how to access ingredient information when
purchasing cosmetics - Provide references/resources for your ongoing use
in the future.
3Can Gluten be absorbed by the skin?
- Gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed
through the skin, although this is a common
misperception. - If you are having skin reactions to cosmetics or
other products that contain gluten, its possible
that you are having an allergic reaction to one
or more of the products ingredients. - The same is true for people with dermatitis
herpetiformis. This painful skin disorder, which
causes an itchy, blistering rash, results from
eating gluten, not from skin contact with gluten.
4Gliadin Molecule
5Do Celiacs Need Gluten Free Cosmetics?
- Celiac disease is triggered by consumption of
gluten. For this reason, people with celiac
disease must eliminate all gluten from their
diet. - Gluten-containing skin-care products and
cosmetics aren't a problem unless you
accidentally swallow them.
6CROSS CONTAMINATION
- Cross contamination from hand to mouth is the
greatest source of ingesting gluten from
cosmetics. - Some Products to avoid if they contain gluten
because they might accidentally get into your
mouth and can be swallowed - Lipstick, Shampoos, Conditioners, Toothpastes,
Hand Lotions etc.
7An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth A Pound of Cure
-
- Lipsticks and lip balms
- Regular lipstick wearers will ingest up to four
and a half kilos of lipstick during their lifetime
8An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth A Pound of Cure
- Shampoos and soaps
- Especially with small children (if your
- child puts her hair in her mouth, or likes
- to play in the bath, gluten-free soaps and
- shampoos are a much better option)
9An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth A Pound of Cure
- Dental products
- such as mouthwash and toothpaste
10An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth A Pound of Cure
11An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth A Pound of Cure
12An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth A Pound of Cure
- There is debate as to how cosmetics affect the
Celiac/ Gluten free person. Each individual needs
to determine their comfort level with the
products that they are using on their skin and
hair. If it comes in contact with your nose or
mouth you may want that product to be gluten
free.
13How do I avoid Gluten containing products?
- DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!
- Check labels. If the item isnt labelled ask for
the manufacturing inserts. - According to Consumer Product Safety for Canada
Cosmetic Regulations in Part II of the Canada
Gazette. The Regulations now require mandatory
ingredient labelling on all cosmetic products
sold in Canada. The requirements come into force
on November 16, 2006
