Domestic scale pellet boilers
1,150/kw installed
15kW automatic pellet boiler
5
Small chip boilers
35kW chip/pellet boiler (Nant-yr-Arian)
1,100 /kw installed
6
Big chip boilers
Wood Chip (Aberaeron) 450Kw
950 /kw installed
7
Big pellet boilers
150kW Ashwells pellet boiler (UK) Merthyr
400 /kw installed
8
Manually fed industrial
50kW manually fed hot air Talbotts (UK)
83 /kw installed
9
Key observations regarding woodfuel heating
  • Technology should be mature if systems are well
designed no reason to expect problems
  • Very expensive. Average is 600/kw installed.
    (40-120/kw for oil or gas).
  • Sites with big heat loads should have the best
    payback
  • Big range of technologies sophistication vs
cost. Can be hard for customers to make informed
    choices?

10
Small scale CHP
3 technologies 2,500 to 4,000 /kwe
250kW cyclone gasifier CHP
11
Key observations regarding woodfuel CHP
  • Technologies under development
  • High costs of these early proto-types
  • Much longer than expected development and
commissioning time - 4 years and counting!
  • Need to monitor performance before commissioning
    any more

Objectives for Bioenergy
  • Reduce green house gas emmissions
  • Contribute to long-term fuel security
  • Encourage sustainable forestry and agriculture
  • Support business development and job creation

19
Conclusions from a Forestry Commission perspective
  • Manage the woodlands we have better
  • Plant more woodlands
  • Only burn what is unsuitable for other uses
  • Avoid transporting and burning wet wood
  • Minimise transport and processing costs
  • Burn the wood in efficient appliances which
achieve high levels of displacement of fossil
    fuels
