4Challenges
- How can we work together to
- Develop consensus within the ocean science
community on priorities? - Gain public support for those priorities?
- Encourage cooperation among federal agencies
engaged in ocean science? - Increase funding to meet basic science
requirements? - Take best advantage of the opportunities
presented by the Oceans Commission? - Encourage and develop ocean science education
initiatives? - Define and build integrated ocean observing
systems (both coastal and ocean)? - Build the cross disciplinary teams needed to
address complex ocean and coastal issues?

9Commission on Ocean Policy
CORE Priorities Letter
- Increase funding for basic research in ocean
sciences - Implement an integrated and sustained coastal and
ocean observing system - Enhance ocean science education support and human
resource development - Recapitalize scientific infrastructure and
support systems - Improve the scientific basis for decisions about
the use of marine resources and the protection of
marine ecosystems and public health - Improve interagency coordination and integration

16National Oceanographic Partnership Program
- 14 Federal agencies together providing
leadership and coordination of national
oceanographic research education programs - Facilitates new interactions among federal
agencies, academia industry - Increases visibility for ocean issues on the
national agenda - Achieves a higher level of coordinated effort
synergy across the broad oceanographic community.

17National Ocean Sciences Bowl(NOSB)
- Timed academic competition for high school
students that focuses on ocean-related topics
including - Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Geology
- Maritime History Technology
- CORE serves as the National Office and manages
the NOSB. Funding is provided by both federal and
private entities--including Industry!

18The Census of Marine Life
- Discovering the marine communities of the past.
- Exploring the multitude of ocean life today.
- Predicting the pattern of ocean ecosystems in the
future.
19The Census of Marine Life is
- a research program that will examine changes in
the diversity, distribution and abundance of
marine organisms in time and space - an international program that will involve
experts in a variety of biological fields from
around the globe - an emerging program that will identify key
questions and support observations and research
over the next 5-10 years
20The Census of Marine LifeBackground
- Initial concept developed by the scientific
community with funds from the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation, NY - Expert advice sought through feasibility
workshops (1997-1998) - Secretariat established at the Consortium for
Oceanographic Research and Education (1999) - Scientific Steering Committee established (1999)
- Scientific Strategy drafted for review and
comment (early 2001)
